What is a refurbished APC UPS?

A refurbished APC UPS is a previously-deployed unit — typically returned from end-of-lease, decommissioned data-centre rack, or trade-in — that has been disassembled, electrically tested under load, fitted with a new battery cartridge or string, cosmetically cleaned, and re-certified to APC's published electrical specification. Refurbished SKUs are sold at a substantial discount to new and are the right fit when the deployment horizon is shorter than the SLA battery cycle, when budget is the constraint, or when the original part number is end-of-life and only available on the secondary market.

Important warranty note. Refurbished APC units sold by UPSPLUSBATTERY.CA carry a 12-month UPSPLUSBATTERY in-house warranty, not the original APC factory warranty. Factory warranty is non-transferable and does not apply once a unit has been refurbished and resold. We service refurbished-unit warranty claims directly from our Canadian team. How we refurbish

Battery

Every refurbished UPS sold ships with a new battery cartridge or factory-spec aftermarket pack matched to the unit's original APCRBC. We do not resell with the factory battery in place — battery is the most failure-prone component and refurbished units are not worth the warranty exposure on aged cells.

Electrical test

Inverter and rectifier sections tested under load on a calibrated electronic load bank. Output sine purity, transfer time, and rated runtime calibrated against APC's published specification for that model. Units that fail load test are stripped for parts.

Firmware and self-test

Firmware updated to the most recent APC release available for the model. Battery install date reset on the front panel so PowerChute correctly tracks runtime calibration. Network management card (where present, AP9641) firmware checked and hard-reset to defaults so the buyer can configure cleanly.

Cosmetic and physical

Chassis cleaned and inspected for dent / impact damage. Rail kits and front bezels included where the original SKU shipped with them. Connector polarity, terminal block torque, and front-panel LCD verified.

Pricing and lead time

Refurbished pricing typically runs 40–60% below new-unit list for the same model. Stock fluctuates because refurbished inventory is sourced from real-world decommissioning — specific SKUs come and go. Replacement batteries

Refurbished units use the same APCRBC cartridge as the new equivalent. SMT1500RM2UC: APCRBC133. SMT3000RMI2U: RBC43. SRT5KRMXLT: APCRBC140. Aftermarket cartridges in stock are built to identical V, Ah, terminal, and connector spec as factory cells and carry a 1-year UPSPLUSBATTERY warranty.

Installation and warranty

Smart-UPS and Back-UPS Pro plug-and-play on standard NEMA receptacles. Smart-UPS SRT 5 kVA and above typically require hard-wire input by licensed electrician per CSA. FAQ

Is a refurbished APC as reliable as a new one?

Mechanically and electrically, yes — refurbished units are tested under load and fitted with new batteries. The trade-offs are warranty term (12 months UPSPLUSBATTERY vs 3 years APC factory on new SMT/SMX/SRT) and the fact that the unit's electronics have already accumulated some service hours. For deployments with horizons under 5 years, that math typically favours refurbished.

Does APC honour the factory warranty on a refurbished unit?

No. APC factory warranty is non-transferable and does not apply once a unit has been refurbished and resold. UPSPLUSBATTERY's 12-month in-house warranty is the warranty of record on every refurbished unit we sell.

What's included with a refurbished UPS?

The unit, a new battery cartridge or pack matched to the model's APCRBC spec, the factory rail kit and front bezel where the original SKU shipped with them, and the AP9641 network management card if the model included one. Can I install a refurbished SRT myself?

SRT 1.5–3 kVA units are typically plug-and-play on L5-30 / L6-20 / L6-30 receptacles depending on model. SRT 5 kVA and above usually require hard-wire input by licensed electrician per CSA. Symmetra refurbished frames always require qualified commissioning.

How long does a refurbished UPS last?

The new battery cartridge follows APC's published 3–5 year SLA service life in 20–25 °C climate-controlled ambient. Smart-UPS and SRT electronics are designed for far longer service — well-maintained units routinely run 10+ years across 2–3 battery cycles. Replace the battery promptly when PowerChute or front-panel flags it as "replace."

What about RMA?
