Why lithium UPS?

Lithium-ion UPS replaces sealed lead-acid (SLA) battery strings with sealed LiFePO₄ cells managed by a tier-1 Battery Management System. The trade-off is straightforward: higher upfront UPS sticker for substantial operating advantages over the deployment lifetime — XPC rates lithium-ion service life at up to 15 years or 3,000–5,000 cycles, with operating temperatures up to 50 °C (122 °F) and derating only above 40 °C. For long-deployment, hot-ambient, hard-to-reach, or high-cycle sites, lithium pays back over the life of the UPS through avoided battery replacements and reduced truck rolls.

How to choose

When lithium pays back

Sites with 5+ year deployment horizon — single battery replacement avoidance covers most of the lithium premium. Sites where the UPS is hard to reach (remote site, ceiling deployment, behind digital signage). High-cycle sites (frequent self-tests, frequent short events). Hot environments — lithium tolerates 40–50 °C ambient with much less degradation than SLA.

When SLA still wins

Lower upfront budget, short deployment horizon, climate-controlled rack with on-site IT. Compare against equivalent SLA P91 / T91 / P80 / A60 in online, line-interactive, and standby catalogs.

J90 / P91 Li / P91g Li at 1.5 kVA — typical real-world deliverable: 1500 VA / 1350 W on 120 V variants, 1500 VA / 1500 W on P91g Li 230 V (Unity PF). Replacement batteries

All XPC lithium packs are factory-matched at manufacture — BMS firmware specific to each model. UPSPLUSBATTERY.CA does not stock aftermarket lithium replacements (chemistry, BMS, and safety certification require factory matching). What chemistry?

LiFePO₄ (lithium iron phosphate). The safest of common lithium-ion chemistries — far higher thermal runaway threshold than NMC or LCO. Industry standard for UPS lithium deployments.

How long does the lithium pack actually last?

XPC rates LiFePO₄ for up to 15 years or 3,000–5,000 discharge cycles. Real-world depends on cycle count and ambient temperature — climate-controlled site at 20–25 °C typically tracks the upper end; 40–50 °C ambient sees expected service life closer to 8–10 years.

Lithium vs SLA — total cost?

Lithium upfront sticker is higher. Over a 10-year deployment, SLA typically needs 2 full battery replacements (~30 % of UPS cost each) plus labour. Lithium avoids the replacements. Long deployments and hot ambient are usually cheaper on lithium.

Aftermarket lithium replacements?

No. Lithium-pack BMS firmware is matched to UPS at manufacture. UPSPLUSBATTERY.CA does not stock aftermarket lithium for any XPC lithium series — only factory packs. Aftermarket SLA cartridges available across the rest of the XPC range.

Can I extend J90 runtime?

Yes — J90-2KLi and J90-3KLi accept the J90-EBP48 external battery pack (20 Ah, 48 V DC LiFePO₄). 1U lithium pack matches the UPS chassis. XPC battery packs.

Is lithium safe in a server rack?
