Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are replacing sealed lead-acid (SLA) as the standard chemistry for premium UPS applications. The advantages are decisive: 3 to 5× the service life, 2 to 3× the energy density (smaller footprint for the same runtime), zero degradation in hot environments up to 50°C, and dramatically lower total cost of ownership over a 10-year deployment cycle.

Xtreme Power offers lithium across three series: J60 Li (350 to 600VA standby for home/small office), J90 Li (1 to 3kVA online for telecom and edge), and P91 Li / P91g Li (1.5 to 3kVA online for mission-critical IT). All lithium models include a 6-year warranty when installed at ≤40°C ambient, twice the warranty period of comparable lead-acid units.

Why lithium UPS?

Lithium-ion UPS replaces sealed lead-acid (SLA) battery strings with sealed LiFePO₄ cells managed by a Battery Management System (BMS). XPC rates lithium-ion service life at up to 15 years or 3,000 to 5,000 cycles, with operating temperatures up to 50 °C (122 °F) and derating only above 40 °C. For long-deployment, hot-ambient, hard-to-reach, or high-cycle sites, lithium means fewer battery replacements and fewer site visits over the life of the UPS.

How to choose

When lithium fits

Sites with a deployment horizon of 5 years or more, where avoiding battery replacements matters. Sites where the UPS is hard to reach (remote site, ceiling deployment, behind digital signage). High-cycle sites (frequent self-tests, frequent short events). Hot environments: lithium tolerates 40 to 50 °C ambient with much less degradation than SLA.

When SLA fits

Short deployment horizon, climate-controlled rack with on-site IT. Compare with the SLA P91 / T91 / P80 / A60 models in online, line-interactive, and standby catalogs.

Sizing

J90 / P91 Li / P91g Li at 1.5 kVA: typical real-world deliverable: 1500 VA / 1350 W on 120 V variants, 1500 VA / 1500 W on P91g Li 230 V (Unity PF). Replacement batteries

All XPC lithium packs are factory-matched at manufacture, BMS firmware specific to each model. UPSPLUSBATTERY.CA does not stock aftermarket lithium replacements (chemistry, BMS, and safety certification require factory matching). J60, J60C, J90 1 to 1.5 kVA, P91 Li 1.5 kVA plug-and-play on standard NEMA receptacles. J90-3K and P91-3K typically need NEMA L5-30P. P91g Li / J90i use IEC C20. Li90 hard-wired with site commissioning. Warranty (USA and Canada): J60 5 yr (2 yr above 40 °C); J90 / J90i 6 yr electronics + 6 yr battery; P91 Li / P91g Li 6 yr (2 yr above 40 °C); Li90 5x8 startup + 2 yr on-site, 5-year parts-limited battery. What chemistry?

LiFePO₄ (lithium iron phosphate), which has a higher thermal runaway threshold than NMC or LCO chemistries.

How long does the lithium pack actually last?

XPC rates LiFePO₄ for up to 15 years or 3,000 to 5,000 discharge cycles. Real-world life depends on cycle count and ambient temperature: a climate-controlled site at 20 to 25 °C typically tracks the upper end; 40 to 50 °C ambient sees expected service life closer to 8 to 10 years.

Lithium vs SLA over a long deployment?

Over a 10-year deployment, SLA typically needs 2 full battery replacements plus labour. Lithium, rated by XPC for up to 15 years, avoids them. Long deployments and hot ambient favour lithium.

Aftermarket lithium replacements?

No. Lithium-pack BMS firmware is matched to UPS at manufacture. UPSPLUSBATTERY.CA does not stock aftermarket lithium for any XPC lithium series, only factory packs. Aftermarket SLA cartridges available across the rest of the XPC range.

Can I extend J90 runtime?

Yes: J90-2KLi and J90-3KLi accept the J90-EBP48 external battery pack (20 Ah, 48 V DC LiFePO₄). 1U lithium pack matches the UPS chassis. XPC battery packs.

Is lithium safe in a server rack?

LiFePO₄ packs in J60 / J90 / P91 Li / Li90 are sealed and BMS-managed, with cell-level temperature, voltage, and current monitoring. Confirm local code with AHJ for medical and high-density data-centre installs.

Power factor?

P91g Li and Li90 ship Unity PF (1.0). VA = W. P91 Li 120 V variants typically 0.9 PF. J90 series rated near unity on most SKUs.

Canadian warranty?
