About Three-Phase UPS Systems

Three-phase UPS systems for server rooms and data centres

A three-phase UPS feeds racks, rooms and small data centres where the load has outgrown single-phase power. Three-phase input (208/120 V or 480 V depending on the model) spreads the load across three conductors, which keeps current, cable size and heat manageable as capacity grows. The three-phase units here are online double-conversion: the load always runs on regenerated power, and a utility failure transfers with zero break.

The collection covers the families we supply and support in Canada, XPC first: Xtreme Power Conversion E91 three-phase systems, then Eaton 9355 and 93PM (Eaton has discontinued the 93E and the BladeUPS), APC Galaxy VS, Easy UPS 3S and Symmetra, and Vertiv Liebert ITA2, from 8 kVA rack systems to 80 kVA floor-standing units. Most models above CAD 10,000 are sold by quote so the voltage, wiring and battery configuration match your room.

Runtimes are manufacturer full-load figures with the internal batteries shown. Most three-phase systems extend runtime with battery cabinets, so the runtime you get depends on the configuration.

How to choose a three-phase UPS

Start with your voltage. Most rooms in Canada run 208/120 V three-phase, which the ITA2, Galaxy VS and 9355 families serve directly. 480 V inputs exist on specific models; if your building distribution is 480 V you need a model rated for it or a step-down transformer in front of it. Get this right before anything else.

Size in kW, not just kVA. Servers draw close to unity power factor, so the watt rating is the real limit. A 40 kVA / 32 kW 93E carries 32 kW, full stop. Add 20 to 25 percent headroom for growth.

Decide how much runtime. Internal batteries give minutes, enough to ride through a transfer or shut down hosts. If you must bridge to a generator, add external battery cabinets sized to your load; ask us for a runtime calculation with your load in watts.

Rack or floor. ITA2 and the 8 kW BladeUPS fit the rack. Galaxy VS, 93E and 93PM are floor-standing cabinets that need aisle space, and the larger units need a floor that carries their weight.

Plan the wiring and service. Three-phase UPS systems are hardwired by a licensed electrician, and a maintenance bypass cabinet lets you service the UPS without dropping the load. Budget for both.

Why buy a three-phase system here

  • Online double-conversion power on the three-phase models listed above
  • Brands carried across the whole store: Eaton, APC and Vertiv batteries and service parts are one search away
  • Quote-based configuration for units above CAD 10,000, with runtime and redundancy checked before you buy
  • Modular options (93PM) that add capacity or N+1 redundancy without replacing the system
  • Ships from Canada.

Quotes, configuration and shipping

Three-phase projects rarely end at one box. Request a quote with your load in watts, input voltage and phase, runtime target and whether you need an external bypass or battery cabinets, and we will confirm the model and configuration. Larger systems are quoted with the battery and bypass options included. Ships from Canada.

Frequently asked questions

208/120 V or 480 V input?
Match the UPS to your building distribution. Most IT rooms run 208/120 V. 480 V is common at the service entrance and in industrial plants; ask us which listed models take it directly.

Do I need an electrician?
Usually, yes. Most three-phase UPS here are hardwired; check the Input column of the table for the exceptions. Your electrician pulls the feeders and lands them on the UPS input terminals.

What is N+1 on a three-phase UPS?
On modular systems like BladeUPS and 93PM, one power module more than the load needs. If any single module fails or comes out for service, the rest carry the load.

Can these run single-phase loads?
Yes. A 208/120 V three-phase unit supplies 120 V receptacles or panels, which is the usual way racks of single-phase gear sit behind one three-phase UPS.

Do you help size the system?
Yes. Send the load list in watts, the voltage and the runtime you need, and we return a configuration with the battery count.
