The APC Smart-UPS XL series is APC's extended-runtime line of line-interactive UPS systems, built for servers, network closets, storage arrays and edge equipment that need long battery runtimes during outages. It sits above the standard Smart-UPS line: same pure sine wave, automatic voltage regulation (AVR) and intelligent battery management, but engineered to accept additional external battery packs so a single unit can hold its load for far longer than a self-contained UPS. Within the APC lineup the Smart-UPS XL bridges the gap between everyday Smart-UPS protection and the heavier double-conversion Smart-UPS RT / online families. Every system in this series is line-interactive topology with a pure sine wave output, and all models are extended-runtime capable (they support add-on battery packs). Capacities run from about 1440 VA / 1425 W up to 3000 VA / 2850 W, in both rackmount (2U and 3U) and tower/rack-convertible chassis, in 120 V and 230 V variants.

VA, watts, runtime and form factor are taken from each product's own specifications; runtimes are at half load and full load on internal batteries and increase substantially when external battery packs are added.

How to choose

• Size by watts, not just VA. Your equipment's real draw is measured in watts. A 3000 VA unit here delivers 2400-2850 W depending on model. Add up the wattage of everything you will plug in and leave roughly 20-25% headroom; do not exceed the unit's watt rating.
• Set your runtime expectation. On internal batteries these units give minutes, not hours: roughly 11-28 minutes at half load and 3.5-12 minutes at full load. That is enough to ride out brief outages or trigger a graceful shutdown. Because the entire series is extended-runtime capable, you can add external battery packs to reach hours of runtime where you need it.
• Topology. The whole series is line-interactive with AVR, which corrects under- and over-voltage without switching to battery. This is the right fit for servers, networking and most IT loads on reasonably stable utility power. If you require zero-transfer, fully isolated power for highly sensitive equipment, look at a double-conversion online UPS instead.
• Rack vs tower. Choose a 2U or 3U rackmount model for cabinets and racks, or a tower/rack-convertible model if it may sit on the floor or move between deployments.
