Voltage regulators and transformers: clean, stable power in front of the load

Between the utility and the gear that cares, two devices do the electrical housekeeping. A step-down transformer converts 208 V or 240 V to 120 V so a single feed can serve both worlds. An isolation transformer breaks the electrical bond between source and load, killing ground noise and leakage paths. A voltage regulator holds the output steady while the input sags and swells. This collection holds all three, plus PDU-transformer combinations that distribute what they convert.

How to choose

Convert, isolate or regulate? Convert when the voltage is wrong (208/240 V to 120 V): a step-down transformer. Isolate when noise or ground loops are the problem: an isolation transformer. Regulate when the line wanders but never fails: a voltage regulator. Many devices here do two of the three at once.

Size in kVA with headroom. Transformers do not like running at their ceiling. Take the load in volt-amperes, add 25 percent, and pick the next rating up.

Decide where it lives. The 2U and 4U rackmount units sit in the rack next to the UPS; tower and cabinet units live on the floor; the JX-200 tucks behind a compact UPS. Heat output follows the rating, so leave airflow.

PDU-transformers save a unit. The XPD-IT line converts and distributes in one chassis: 208 V in, isolated 120 V outlets out. For racks that need both conversion and outlet count, that is one less box.

Let the electrician land the feed. Higher-kVA units are hardwired. Plan the breaker, the conductor size and the bypass together.

Frequently asked questions

Transformer or regulator?
A transformer changes voltage; a regulator corrects it continuously as the input moves. If the voltage is steady but wrong, transform. If it wanders, regulate.

Does an isolation transformer protect against surges?
It blocks common-mode noise and transients between primary and secondary, which helps, but it is not a surge protector; pair it with upstream protection.

Can I run a transformer at full rating all day?
It will run, but heat shortens life. The 25 percent headroom rule keeps the windings cool.

Why put the transformer in the rack?
Short heavy runs: the 2U and 4U units deliver 120 V where the servers are instead of pulling a separate circuit across the room.

Do these work with any UPS brand?
The transformers and regulators here feed standard voltages; the SRT and 9PX families are shaped for their own UPS lines. Ask us for a pairing check.
