About APC Smart-UPS 750VA Replacement Batteries

Replacement batteries for the APC Smart-UPS 750VA family

The APC Smart-UPS 750VA line covers a wide range of units built over many years — tower models like the SMT750 and SUA750, the LCD SMT750C, extended-runtime SUA750XLI, 1U rack-mount SUA750RM1U and SUA750RMI1U, and OEM-branded versions sold by Dell (DLA750) and IBM (IBM750I). They share a VA rating, but they do not all use the same battery. This collection groups the compatible replacement cartridges so you can find the right fit for your specific unit.

What battery is inside, and how it scales

These units run on sealed lead-acid (VRLA / AGM) cells. A UPS reaches its required DC bus voltage by wiring multiple 12 volt cells in series inside a single cartridge — for example, two 12 volt cells make a 24 volt cartridge. As model generations changed, APC used different cell capacities and cartridge arrangements across the 750VA family, which is why the per-model specifications in the product grid below are not identical. The capacity and configuration that is correct for an SMT750 is not necessarily correct for an SUA750 or a rack-mount variant.

Identify your battery by exact model

Do not buy by “750VA” alone. Read the full model number from the label on the back or bottom of your UPS (for example SMT750, SUA750I, SUA750XLI, SUA750RM1U, DLA750, or IBM750I) and match it to the product whose title lists that exact model. Each product page shows the voltage and amp-hour rating for that specific kit — confirm those values against your existing battery or your UPS documentation before ordering.

Genuine OEM vs. aftermarket

You have two options: a genuine APC Replacement Battery Cartridge (RBC) from Schneider Electric, or an aftermarket compatible cartridge. Genuine OEM cartridges carry the manufacturer brand and warranty. Aftermarket compatible cartridges use equivalent-grade VRLA cells assembled to the same voltage, capacity, terminal layout, and connector as the original, and are designed as a drop-in replacement — typically at a lower cost. Both are valid; choose based on your warranty and budget requirements.

Battery lifespan

VRLA batteries in a UPS typically last 3 to 5 years under good conditions. Heat is the single biggest factor: as a rule of thumb, every roughly 8 °C of sustained temperature above 25 °C can cut useful battery life by about half. Keep the unit in a cool, well-ventilated spot, and expect shorter service life in warm equipment rooms. If your UPS beeps, fails a self-test, or shows a “replace battery” indicator, the cells are at end of life.

How to replace the battery

  1. Confirm the exact replacement kit for your model number.
  2. Inspect the new cartridge and let it acclimate to room temperature if shipped cold.
  3. Open the battery compartment (front bezel on tower units; front panel on rack units).
  4. Disconnect the old cartridge connector, slide the old battery out, and slide the new one in.
  5. Reconnect the connector firmly, close the compartment, and run a UPS self-test.
  6. Recycle the old lead-acid battery at an approved facility.

Hot-swap note: Smart-UPS, rack-mount, and online (double-conversion) units are designed for hot-swap, meaning the battery can be changed while the UPS continues to power the load. This does not apply to desktop or Back-UPS units — those should be powered down and the load disconnected before changing the battery. When in doubt, power down.

FAQ

Will any 750VA battery fit my unit? No. Match the full model number; the 750VA family uses more than one battery configuration.

Where do I find my model number? On the label on the back or underside of the UPS, and usually in the unit's setup menu or PowerChute software.

Are aftermarket cartridges safe? Yes, when they match the original voltage, capacity, terminal type, and connector. They are built as direct drop-in replacements.

How long will a new battery last? Generally 3 to 5 years, less in hot environments.

Can I replace the battery without shutting down? On Smart-UPS, rack, and online units, yes — they support hot-swap. On desktop/Back-UPS units, power down first.

Replacement battery cartridges for APC Smart-UPS 750VA series — the modern entry-tier rack-mount 1U/2U Smart-UPS for small server cabinets, edge IT, and SOHO deployments. Models supported include SUA750, SUA750I, SUA750IBM (IBM750I rebrand), SUA750J, SUA750JB, SUA750RM1U, SUA750RMI1U, SUA750XLI (Smart-UPS XL 750VA), SMT750, SMT750C, SMT750RM2UC, DLA750 (Dell Smart-UPS 750VA rebrand) plus international and rack-mount variants.

Most Smart-UPS 750VA cartridges use APC RBC18 (single 12V 9Ah) for tower or RBC48 (4-cell 12V 7Ah) for rack-2U — always confirm the cartridge code printed on your existing battery before ordering. SMT750 LCD revisions and SUA750 non-LCD use different cartridges despite similar model numbers.

Recommended swap interval: 3-5 years per IEEE 1188. SMT750 / SUA750 systems are still in current production at APC — cartridge swap is straightforward (slide-out cartridge door at the front or rear of the UPS). For multi-unit deployments contact GDF Technologies for Canada-wide service.
