About Alpha Technologies EBP Extended Battery Packs

Alpha Technologies EBP replacement batteries, matched to your exact model

The Alpha Technologies EBP (Extended Battery Pack) line adds runtime to Alpha UPS and backup-power systems used in broadband, telecom and traffic applications. Each EBP cabinet is wired as a series string of sealed lead-acid (SLA/AGM/VRLA) blocks. Every block in these kits is 12 volts nominal, but the capacity and the number of batteries per kit differ by model. Smaller EBP cabinets use 18 Ah blocks, mid-size cabinets use 35 Ah blocks, and the larger high-capacity cabinets use 90 Ah blocks. Many of the larger EBP models require a full set of 12 batteries to rebuild the string. Because the capacity varies, we do not list one universal spec for the whole series. Use the product that matches your exact EBP model number, and confirm against the specs shown on each product page.

How the EBP battery string scales

An EBP cabinet does not use a single large battery. It uses several identical 12 V blocks wired in series (and sometimes in parallel strings) to reach the system's DC bus voltage and the runtime the cabinet is rated for. That is why a kit may call for 12 batteries: all blocks in a string age together and must be replaced as a complete set. Mixing old and new blocks, or mixing capacities, shortens the life of the whole string and can leave the cabinet unable to hold its rated runtime.

Identify your pack by exact model number

Alpha EBP cabinets are identified by a model designation plus a dash/part number such as EBP 417-48B (032-056-31) or EBP 1275-48R (031-041-XX). The model and part number are printed on the cabinet label. Match that exact string to the product title and to the compatible-models field on the product page before ordering. The product grid on this page shows the per-block voltage, capacity (Ah) and the number of batteries required for each kit so you can confirm before you buy.

Genuine OEM vs. aftermarket replacements

You have two options when an EBP string reaches end of life. Genuine OEM packs are sourced through Alpha Technologies / EnerSys and carry the manufacturer's branding and pricing. Aftermarket replacement batteries are equivalent SLA/AGM blocks built to the same form factor, voltage, capacity and terminal type. A correctly specified aftermarket block is a drop-in compatible replacement and is typically far less expensive. The batteries sold here are aftermarket compatible replacements, not OEM-branded units.

Battery lifespan and the effect of heat

Sealed lead-acid blocks in standby float service typically last 3 to 5 years before capacity drops enough to warrant replacement. Heat is the single biggest factor: as a rule of thumb, every 8 °C of sustained operating temperature above 25 °C roughly halves the service life of an SLA battery. A cabinet running warm in a non-climate-controlled enclosure can wear its batteries out in a fraction of the rated life, so plan replacement intervals around the actual environment, not just the calendar.

How to replace the batteries

EBP cabinets are floor- or rack-mounted extended-battery enclosures wired as series strings carrying high DC voltage. These are not desktop units, and they are not designed to be hot-swapped like a plug-in UPS battery module. Treat every replacement as a planned electrical maintenance task and follow the procedure for your cabinet:

  1. Order the kit that matches your exact EBP model number, including the full quantity of blocks the string requires.
  2. Schedule a maintenance window. Transfer or shed the protected load, then shut the system down per the Alpha service manual so the battery string is de-energized before you open the cabinet.
  3. Confirm the string is isolated and verify zero voltage at the terminals before disconnecting any block. A series string can carry a lethal DC voltage even when the AC source is removed.
  4. Replace every block in the string at the same time. Note polarity and inter-block links, torque terminals to the Alpha-specified value, and never mix old and new blocks.
  5. Re-energize, verify the system returns to float/standby normally, and recycle the spent SLA batteries through a certified lead-acid recycler.

Important: if your site cannot tolerate downtime, do not improvise a live swap on an EBP cabinet. Use a temporary backup source or a qualified power-service technician to maintain protection while the string is de-energized and replaced. Always work to the Alpha service manual for your specific cabinet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which kit fits my EBP cabinet?
Read the model and part number from the cabinet label (for example EBP 144E (032-036-XX)) and match it exactly to a product title and its compatible-models field. The grid above lists the voltage, Ah and battery count for each kit.

Why does a kit require 12 batteries?
Larger EBP cabinets reach their rated voltage and runtime by wiring twelve 12 V blocks in series. The whole string must be replaced as a set so all blocks age together.

Are these the same as the original Alpha batteries?
They are aftermarket compatible replacements built to the same voltage, capacity, form factor and terminal type. They are a drop-in equivalent, not OEM-branded packs.

How long will the new batteries last?
Typically 3 to 5 years in float service. Expect less in warm enclosures, since life roughly halves for every 8 °C above 25 °C.

Can I replace just the one dead block?
No. Replace the entire string at once. A single new block forced into a string of aged blocks will be dragged down and fail early.
