The N+1 math, in one example
Suppose your server room draws 16 kW and the platform uses 4 kW power modules. Four modules carry the load (N = 4). A fifth module makes the system N+1: any one module can fail or be pulled for service while the remaining four still carry the full 16 kW. You reach fault tolerance for the price of one extra module — not a second complete UPS. That is the economic core of the modular argument, and why the format took over data centres.

Configuring a modular system: frame → modules → batteries
- Size the frame for the end-state. Frames are cheap relative to modules — buy headroom. If the load could reach 30 kW in five years, don't buy a 20 kW-max frame.
- Install modules for today's load + 1. Current draw ÷ module rating, rounded up, plus one module for N+1. Modules add in minutes later.
- Add battery for the runtime you actually need. Internal trays cover minutes; matching external cabinets (like the XPC M90-BC / X90-BC series, from 4 to 36 battery modules) extend to longer holds. More cabinets = more runtime, added any time.
- Leave lithium on the table deliberately. Several platforms now offer lithium-ion battery options — longer calendar life and smaller footprint at higher up-front cost. Is a modular UPS worth it for a small server room?
If your load is stable and under ~5 kVA, a quality conventional UPS is usually the better buy. Modular starts paying off when the load will grow, when you need N+1 fault tolerance, or when downtime for a future capacity upgrade is unacceptable — the upgrade becomes a module insertion instead of a forklift replacement.

Can I add redundancy to a modular UPS later?
Yes — that's the point. If the frame has a free slot, one additional power module takes the system from N to N+1 with no rewiring and, on hot-swap platforms, no shutdown.
What happens when a power module fails?
On an N+1 configured system the remaining modules pick up the load instantly, the failed module raises an alarm, and it's replaced hot — the load never sees it. On an N (non-redundant) configuration the UPS transfers to bypass or sheds to the remaining capacity, which is why the +1 module is cheap insurance.
