About APC Smart-UPS 1500 Battery Replacements

APC Smart-UPS 1500 replacement batteries

Replacement cartridges for the APC Smart-UPS 1500 family — the SMT1500, SMC1500 and SMX1500 line-interactive models. Every current Smart-UPS 1500 uses a sealed lead-acid (SLA) cartridge in a defined APCRBC configuration, hot-swappable while the UPS keeps protecting the load. Cartridges typically need replacement every 3–5 years in a 20–25 °C environment. UPSPLUSBATTERY.CA stocks both genuine APC and compatible aftermarket equivalents, shipped from our Canadian warehouse.

For the full Smart-UPS range see APC Smart-UPS replacement batteries; for online SRT models see Smart-UPS RT batteries; for the complete APC catalog see APC RBC batteries.

The cartridge is printed on the unit label and in the user manual; on any Smart-UPS 1500 with an LCD, the About → Battery menu also displays the APCRBC part number directly. Running an older SUA1500-era unit or can't read the label? Send us the exact model number and we'll confirm the correct cartridge — replies within 1 business day.

How to identify the right cartridge

Method 1: front-panel LCD

On SMT, SMC and SMX 1500 models, navigate to About → Battery on the LCD. It displays the APCRBC part number directly.

Method 2: unit label

The side or rear of the chassis lists the model number and the compatible APCRBC.

Method 3: existing cartridge

Open the front bezel — the cartridge label lists cell count, voltage and Ah.

Genuine APC vs compatible aftermarket

Both power the UPS correctly. The differences:

Genuine APC: OEM cartridge with factory tested-date sticker, 2-year APC battery warranty, and guaranteed compatibility with PowerChute runtime estimation. Required for an in-warranty Smart-UPS 1500 or a unit under an active Schneider Electric service contract.

Compatible aftermarket: Identical form factor, connector and voltage stack — built from CSB, Yuasa, BB Battery or Panasonic SLA cells. Typically 30–50 % less than genuine, with a 1-year UPSPLUSBATTERY warranty.

How long does a Smart-UPS 1500 battery last?

3–5 years for SLA cells in a 20–25 °C climate-controlled environment. Three factors shorten that:

  • Ambient temperature. Every ~8 °C above 25 °C roughly halves service life.
  • Discharge cycles. Each full discharge consumes life — frequent outages age a pack faster.
  • Float voltage. APC's temperature-compensated charging extends life on genuine cartridges.

The front-panel LCD and PowerChute flag the battery as "replace" once internal impedance crosses the threshold. See when to replace a UPS battery.

How to replace

Every current Smart-UPS 1500 uses a hot-swappable APCRBC cartridge — the UPS keeps protecting the load during the swap:

  1. Order the correct APCRBC (verify against the unit label or LCD About menu).
  2. Slide the front bezel off the UPS.
  3. Disconnect the polarised battery plug.
  4. Slide the old cartridge out, the new one in.
  5. Reconnect the polarised plug until it clicks.
  6. Replace the front bezel.
  7. Reset the install date via the LCD: About → Battery → Reset install date.

The swap takes about 5 minutes. See how to install a UPS battery.

Warranty and support

Genuine APC cartridges carry a 2-year APC battery warranty; compatible aftermarket cartridges carry a 1-year full-replacement UPSPLUSBATTERY warranty, coordinated through our Canadian team. Shipped from our Canadian warehouse — replies within 1 business day.

FAQ

Which cartridge does my SMT1500RM2UC take?

SMT1500RM2UC takes APCRBC133 (24 V, 9 Ah). The same cartridge fits SMT1500RMI2U, SMC1500-2UC and SMX1500RM2UC. Verify on the unit label or LCD About menu.

What about the tower SMT1500?

The tower SMT1500 and SMT1500I take APCRBC7 (24 V, 17 Ah).

Aftermarket or genuine?

For an in-warranty unit, use genuine APC. For out-of-warranty units, a compatible aftermarket cartridge performs identically and costs 30–50 % less, with a 1-year UPSPLUSBATTERY warranty.

Is it hot-swappable?

Yes — on every current Smart-UPS 1500 (SMT, SMC, SMX), the cartridge is replaced with the UPS still protecting the load.

How often should I replace it?

Every 3–5 years in a climate-controlled room; sooner in hot or poorly-ventilated spaces.

Replacement batteries for the APC Smart-UPS 1500VA family — the most-deployed line-interactive UPS in North American IT closets, retail POS, and small server rooms. Whether you have an SU1500, SUA1500, SMT1500, SUA1500RM, or compatible 1500VA Smart-UPS, the standard OEM cartridge is the APC RBC7.

What Battery Does My APC Smart-UPS 1500 Take?

Most APC Smart-UPS 1500VA models use the RBC7 cartridge — 24V, 17Ah, sealed lead-acid (SLA / VRLA), hot-swappable. Some newer SMT1500-series variants use slightly different cartridges; always confirm the OEM cartridge code on your existing battery label before ordering.
