About APC Back-UPS Pro BR Replacement Batteries

Replacement batteries for the APC Back-UPS Pro BR series

The APC Back-UPS Pro BR family covers a wide range of capacities, from the BR1100 up through the BR1600. Every unit ships from the factory with a sealed lead-acid (SLA / VRLA) battery cartridge, and that cartridge is the part that wears out long before the electronics do. This collection groups together compatible replacement packs for the Back-UPS Pro BR line so you can refresh runtime without replacing the whole UPS.

Battery type and how packs are built

Back-UPS Pro BR cartridges are built from 12-volt sealed lead-acid blocks. The configuration is not the same across the series: some models in this line run on a single 12V block, while higher-capacity models wire two or more 12V blocks together to reach the pack voltage the inverter expects. Because the block count, the resulting pack voltage, and the amp-hour rating differ from model to model, we do not quote one universal number. The specification shown on each product page is the figure that matters for the unit named in that listing.

Identify your battery by exact model

Match your battery by the exact UPS model number printed on the label on the back or underside of your unit (for example BR1300MI, BR1500M2-LM, BR1350MS, BR1600MI). Cross-reference that against the product titles in the grid above, then confirm the voltage and amp-hour rating listed on the product page before you order. The model number — not the marketing capacity in VA — is what guarantees a correct fit.

Genuine OEM versus aftermarket

APC sells branded Replacement Battery Cartridges (RBCs) under the Schneider Electric label. Aftermarket packs use the same sealed lead-acid chemistry and the same physical form factor, terminals, and connectors, and are sold as compatible replacements at a lower price. Both are valid options: a genuine OEM cartridge carries the manufacturer's branding, while a quality aftermarket pack delivers equivalent runtime and fit. The products in this collection are aftermarket compatible replacements unless a listing states otherwise.

Expected lifespan

Sealed lead-acid UPS batteries typically last 3 to 5 years. Heat is the single largest factor in how fast they age: as a rule of thumb, battery life is roughly halved for every 8°C of sustained operating temperature above 25°C. Keep the unit in a cool, ventilated spot and out of direct sun or enclosed cabinets to get the full service life.

How to replace the battery

The Back-UPS Pro BR is a desktop/tower unit, so the battery is not a live hot-swap part. Follow these steps:

  1. Save your work and shut down any connected equipment.
  2. Power off the UPS and unplug it from the wall outlet.
  3. Open the battery compartment (usually a panel on the front or underside).
  4. Disconnect the old cartridge, slide it out, and insert the new pack.
  5. Reconnect the terminals, close the compartment, plug the UPS back in, and power it on.
  6. Allow a full charge (typically several hours) before relying on backup runtime.

Hot-swapping — changing the battery while the unit stays online — is only supported on rack-mount, Smart-UPS and online/double-conversion models that are designed for it. It is not supported on desktop Back-UPS or Back-UPS Pro units.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which battery fits my UPS? Use the exact model number on the unit's label and match it to a product in the grid above, then confirm the specs on the product page.

What battery chemistry do these use? Sealed lead-acid (SLA / VRLA), the same chemistry APC ships from the factory.

Can I hot-swap the battery? No — Back-UPS Pro BR is a desktop unit. Power down and unplug before replacing. Hot-swap is for rack/Smart-UPS/online models only.

How long will the new battery last? Typically 3 to 5 years, with heat the main factor that shortens that span.

Are aftermarket batteries safe to use? Yes. They use the same chemistry, form factor, and connectors and are sold as compatible replacements.

Models supported include BR550GI, BR700G, BR900GI, BR1100CI, BR1200SI, BR1300G, BR1300MI, BR1350MS, BR1350MS-TW, BR1500G, BR1500GI, BR1500M2, BR1500M2-LM, BR1500MS2, BR1500MS, BR1500SI, BR1600SI, BR1600MI plus regional variants (BR-CN, BR-IN, BR-TW, BR-MS).

Most BR-series UPS use APC RBC123 (4-cell 12V 7Ah) or RBC124 (single 12V 9Ah) cartridges — always confirm the cartridge code printed on your existing battery before ordering. Newer BR1500M2/BR1600MI revisions sometimes use RBC176. Hot-swap design lets you replace cartridges without dropping the load.

Recommended swap interval: 3-5 years per IEEE 1188. Old battery still works? Recycle responsibly at any Call2Recycle Canada drop-off site — SLA cells are 100% recyclable. Calculate runtime before swap.
