Replacement batteries for the APC Smart-UPS 2200VA family. For the SMT2200 tower and compatible 2200VA Smart-UPS towers, the standard APC cartridge is the APC RBC55 (a 48V pack of 12V 17Ah blocks, one cartridge); the 2U rack SMT2200RM2U uses the RBC43.

What Battery Does My APC Smart-UPS 2200 Take?

The APC Smart-UPS 2200VA towers use the RBC55 cartridge, sealed lead-acid (SLA / VRLA, AGM chemistry), hot-swappable. APC lists the RBC43 for the 2U rack SMT2200RM2U, the APCRBC143 for the Smart-UPS X SMX2200HVNC and the RBC57 for the Smart-UPS RT 2200 (SURTA2200XL). Always confirm the cartridge code on your existing battery label before ordering.

How to identify the right battery

Read the model number on the unit's rear or side label (for example SMT2200RM2U or SU2200R3X106). Newer SMT tower models take the RBC55 cartridge (SMT2200, SMT2200C) and the rack SMT2200RM2U takes RBC43; the legacy SU-series takes a 48 V battery set. APC reuses designs across many SKUs, so your exact model number is the reliable key.

Both restore full runtime. APC OEM: cartridge supplied by APC, with the manufacturer's warranty. Compatible aftermarket: the same 48 V form factor and connector, with a 1-year UPSPLUSBATTERY warranty.

How long does it last?

APC gives 3 to 5 years in a normal 20 to 25 °C environment. Heat is the main life-shortener: service life roughly halves for every ~8 °C of sustained operation above 25 °C, so a unit in a warm rack or closet may need batteries sooner. See when to replace a UPS battery.

How to replace

Smart-UPS 2200 batteries are user-replaceable and hot-swappable on current models (check the user manual): the UPS keeps protecting the load during the swap.

  1. Confirm the correct cartridge or set for your exact model.
  2. Open the battery compartment (front bezel on tower models; tray latch on rack models).
  3. Disconnect the battery connector.
  4. Slide the old pack out and the new one in.
  5. Reconnect the connector until it clicks.
  6. Close up, run a self-test, and allow 8 to 24 hours for a full charge before relying on full runtime.

What battery does the SMT2200 use?

The SMT2200, SMT2200C and SMT3000 use the RBC55 cartridge (APCRBC55), a 48 V VRLA pack; the rack SMT2200RM2U uses RBC43. For an SMX3000, check the unit label (APC lists APCRBC143 for the SMX3000HV). Confirm against your model label.

What about an older SU2200?

Legacy SU2200 models (for example SU2200R3X or SU2200RM3U) take a 48 V replacement battery set. Send us your model number and we'll match it.

OEM or aftermarket?

For an in-warranty unit, check the APC warranty terms first. Out of warranty, a compatible 48 V pack matched on voltage, capacity and connectors is the usual choice, with a 1-year warranty.

How often should I replace it?

Every 3 to 5 years; sooner in warm or poorly-ventilated spaces.
