The Eaton 5PX series is Eaton's premium line-interactive UPS line for servers, network closets, storage, and edge/IT racks. Every unit delivers a true (pure) sine wave output, an LCD control panel, and ENERGY STAR efficiency, sitting above the entry-level 5P/5S and below Eaton's double-conversion online 9PX/9SX families. The current generation (5PX G2) adds higher power density, a Gigabit Network-M3 card option, and cybersecurity-hardened management. It is built for buyers who need clean, regulated power and short-to-medium runtime for protected loads they can gracefully shut down or ride through brief outages — not for whole-facility backup. If you need always-on, zero-transfer-time conditioning for sensitive or mission-critical loads, look at an online double-conversion series instead.

How to choose a 5PX

VA vs. watts. Size to the larger of the two. Older 5PX units rated their watts at roughly 90% of VA (e.g. 2200 VA / 1980 W); the G2 generation moved to unity (e.g. 3000 VA / 3000 W), so a G2 unit carries more real load at the same VA. Total the wattage of everything you plan to plug in, add ~25% headroom, and pick a model whose watt rating covers it.

Runtime. Internal batteries on this series give a few minutes at full load and roughly double that at half load — enough to ride out brief sags or trigger a clean shutdown. Every 5PX in this range is extended-runtime capable, so you can add Eaton EBMs (external battery modules) to reach much longer runtimes when you need them.

Topology. The entire 5PX series is line-interactive with automatic voltage regulation (AVR) and a pure sine wave inverter output. That is ideal for servers, switches, NAS, and active-PFC power supplies. If your load cannot tolerate any transfer time or needs full input/output isolation, choose an online double-conversion UPS instead.

Rack vs. tower. Most 5PX units are tower/rack convertible and ship with both sets of hardware, so the same unit works on a shelf or in a 2U/3U rack bay. Dedicated rackmount SKUs (e.g. 5PX1500IRT, 5PX3000IRT2U) are optimized for rack installs. Match outlet types to your equipment — lower-VA units use NEMA 5-15R/5-20R, while high-density “H” models provide IEC C13/C19 receptacles for dense rack loads.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Eaton 5PX line-interactive or online? The entire 5PX series is line-interactive with automatic voltage regulation and a pure sine wave output. For online double-conversion, look at the Eaton 9PX/9SX families.

Can I extend the runtime? Yes. Every 5PX in this range is extended-runtime capable and accepts Eaton external battery modules (EBMs) — typically up to four — for substantially longer backup.

What is the difference between the “N”, “H” and base models? “N” (or “NG2”) ships with the network management card included; base models leave it as an option. “H” (high-density) models output 208/230V with IEC C13/C19 receptacles for dense rack loads, while standard models use 120V NEMA outlets.

Will a 5PX power my servers cleanly? Yes — the pure sine wave inverter is compatible with active-PFC server and network power supplies. Size to the total wattage of your load plus about 25% headroom.

Tower or rack — which do I get? Most 5PX units are convertible and include mounting hardware for both. Dedicated rackmount SKUs are labeled IRT/RT2U/RT3U.
