About Xtreme Power 208/230V UPS Systems

What is a 208/230 V UPS?

At 208 V or 230 V, a given watt of load draws roughly half the line current of the same load at 120 V. Half the current means quarter the I²R loss in cabling, smaller breakers, smaller conductors, and standard locking L6-30 receptacles in nearly every rack PDU. For dense IT racks, three-phase facilities, and edge data centres, 208/230 V single-phase or 208/120 V three-phase is the efficient and conventional voltage. Step down to 120 V only when continuous load is below ~2.4 kW.

How to choose

Single-phase vs three-phase 208 V

Most rack-level UPS deployments under 10 kVA run single-phase 208/230 V on L6-30P or hard-wired. Three-phase is required when the upstream distribution is three-phase and you want to balance load across phases — typical at 10 kVA+ in branch data centres and dense compute aisles.

P91 5K / 6K / 10K

2U Unity PF online, selectable input/output 208/220/230/240 V. P91-5K and P91-6K ship with NEMA L6-30P 6-foot input cord — drop into a dedicated 30 A 208 V circuit. P91-10K is hard-wired. Optional XBDM-P91 maintenance bypass distribution modules (with L6-30P input or terminal block) for service without dropping load.

Three-phase decision

M90S is the split-phase 120/208 or 120/240 V family — common where existing distribution gives split-phase. M90C is three-phase 208/120 V — common in commercial three-phase services. M90U / M90U-80 / M90U-140 are Unity PF Modular Online — for 15 to 140 kVA three-phase IT and facility. X90 1S / 2S is 480 V three-phase top-entry for data-centre-scale 50–140 kVA. Li90 is the lithium variant of three-phase 208/120 V at 10–30 kVA.

FAQ

Why move from 120 V to 208 V?

Half the line current at the same watt rating — smaller breakers, smaller conductors, less voltage drop, lower thermal load in the rack. Standard rack PDUs are L6-30 fed from 208 V. For dense racks above 2.4 kW continuous, 208 V is the practical default.

208 V vs 230 V?

P91g and most M90 / X90 series accept both. 208 V is standard for North American three-phase derived single-phase. 230 V is European-style. Most Canadian commercial sites are 208 V. UPS internally regulates output regardless of which input voltage is present within range.

L6-30P vs hard-wire?

L6-30P locks into matching receptacle — UPS can be physically moved or rolled out for service. Hard-wired terminals are rated for higher current but require electrician for any move or replacement. P91 5–6 kVA shipped with L6-30P plug standard; 10 kVA hard-wired only.

What's the biggest XPC three-phase?

X90-2S 140 kVA at 480 V three-phase. Below that, M90U-140 covers 140 kVA at 208/120 V, M90U-80 covers 80 kVA, M90U covers 15–60 kVA single enclosure.

Can I use 208 V to feed my rack PDU?

Yes — that's the standard architecture. P91-6K with L6-30P out → metered/switched L6-30 PDU → C13/C19 servers and switches in the rack.

Battery life and replacement?

SLA: 4–5 years climate-controlled. Lithium (P91g Li, J90i, Li90): up to 15 years rated by XPC. When to replace UPS battery.

Canadian warranty?

Yes — XPC 208/230 V series warranty terms explicitly cover USA and Canada. RMA does not require cross-border shipping. Shipped from our Canadian warehouse.

208/230V UPS systems for high-density rack environments and international deployments — L6-20P, L6-30P, and IEC C20 input.

208/230V UPS systems support twice the load on the same circuit current as 120V — essential for high-density rack environments where you need to run 5kVA+ loads on practical-sized circuits. Common in data centers, server rooms, and international (non-North American) deployments where 230V is standard.
