What is an under-1 kVA UPS?

Sub-1 kVA UPS is the workstation-and-peripheral tier. Single workstation + monitor + dock, point-of-sale terminal, modem and switch in a small office, security DVR, digital signage, kiosk. Standby and entry line-interactive topologies dominate this tier — fast enough transfer for desktop power supplies, simple, lowest cost. All run plug-and-play on standard 120 V NEMA 5-15P (or IEC C14 for 230 V J60i / J60Ci).

Lithium vs SLA at this tier

J60 / J60C lithium: 15-year battery service life, 50 °C operating, ideal for unattended digital signage / kiosk fleets and hot equipment closets. A60 SLA: lowest sticker, 3-year battery life, fine for cool indoor workstation deployments. XPC lithium UPS.

Standby vs line-interactive at this tier

Standby J60 / A60: simpler, lower cost, simulated or stepped-square output on battery. Line-interactive S71 / P80-800: AVR (boost/buck regulation), pure sinewave on P80, more outlets. For any active-PFC server PSU or sensitive AV gear, choose P80-800.

FAQ

What runs the longest on battery in this tier?

J60 lithium models hit up to 7 minutes at full load with significantly longer runtime at partial loads. Larger A60-850 SLA model runs ~6 minutes at half load. P80-800 runs longer at light loads and supports external battery packs for extended ride-through.

Will sub-1 kVA UPS run a server?

Generally no on standby — modern server PSUs are active-PFC and prefer pure sine. For any server, step up to P80-800 (pure sine line-interactive) or T91 / P91 online.

Why pay extra for J60 lithium?

15-year battery service life vs 3-year SLA, 50 °C operating range vs ~25 °C climate-controlled. Pays back in unattended deployments where battery replacement requires a truck roll.

Can I install the battery cartridge myself?

A60 and S71 use front-access cartridges with manufacturer instructions. How to install UPS battery. J60 lithium pack is factory-replaced at end-of-life — most J60 deployments retire the UPS before the pack.

USB shutdown software?

A60, S71, P80 ship with USB cables and bundled XPC shutdown utility (Windows / Linux / macOS). Compatible with NUT (Network UPS Tools) on Linux for centralized monitoring. J60 supports SNMP-2PV3 internal card.
