What is a CyberPower standby UPS?

Standby (offline) UPS topology runs the load directly from utility power and switches to battery only during an outage or out-of-tolerance event. Transfer time typically 6 to 10 ms. Simplest topology, lowest cost, right fit for desktop, point-of-sale, small networking, security DVR, modem and router, console, and home-office equipment with switching power supplies that tolerate brief transfer.

All ship 120 V NEMA 5-15P input, USB shutdown port (LCD models), simulated sine wave output on battery. Outlets typically split between battery-backed and surge-only.

How to choose

Standby vs line-interactive

Standby is fine when utility is reasonably clean and load tolerates 6 to 10 ms transfer. Line-interactive (CP-AVR / PFC / PR) adds AVR, boosts low voltage and bucks high voltage without going to battery. Line-interactive vs online UPS.

Sizing

Add nameplate watts of every load, multiply by 1.25 buffer, pick UPS whose watt rating exceeds. Modem + router + cable box ~50 W → SE425G fits with margin. Workstation + 24" monitor ~120 W → SE600G or EC850LCD. UPS sizing guide.

Standby fit check

SE / EC produce simulated (stepped-square) sine wave on battery. Acceptable for switching power supplies on desktops, monitors, modems, routers, switches, NVRs, consoles. Not appropriate for active-PFC server PSUs, NAS with active-PFC, lab instrumentation, medical equipment.

Replacement batteries

SE / EC use internal SLA cartridges; the cartridge spec is on the unit label and in the user manual (CyberPower lists RB1270B for the EC850LCD). FAQ

Will SE / EC protect a server?

Generally no. Both produce simulated sine on battery and have 6 to 10 ms transfer. For any server or active-PFC NAS, use CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD or PR series.

Runtime?

Stock runtime 5 to 15 minutes at half load depending on model. Long enough for a graceful OS shutdown via USB.

USB shutdown software?

Yes on LCD models. PowerPanel Personal Edition (free download from CyberPower), Windows, Linux, macOS. NUT compatible.

Surge-only outlets?

Most SE / EC include surge-only outlets in addition to battery-backed. Use for printers and devices that don't need ride-through.

Battery life?

3 to 5 years SLA in 20 to 25 °C climate-controlled.
