What is a Tripp Lite double-conversion online UPS?

Online (double-conversion) UPS runs the load permanently from the inverter — utility AC continuously rectified to DC, then re-inverted to clean AC before reaching equipment. Transfer time effectively zero milliseconds during a power event, complete galvanic isolation from utility-side disturbances, fully regenerated sine wave at all times. Required topology for medical equipment, VoIP PBX, precision laboratory gear, industrial control, and edge data centres where line-interactive transfer is unacceptable.

Tripp Lite (now part of Eaton) builds two online lines: SmartOnline SU-series 750 VA to 20 kVA single-phase, and SmartOnline S3M three-phase 10–80 kVA for data centre and large facility. Sizing

SU-series at 1.5 kVA – 3 kVA: typically 0.9 PF (SU3000RTXL2U delivers ~2700 W at 3000 VA). SU 6 kVA+: approach unity PF. Add nameplate watts of all loads, multiply by 1.25 buffer, pick the UPS whose watt rating exceeds. UPS sizing guide.

Single-phase vs three-phase

Up to 10 kVA single-phase covers most rack-level deployments. Above that or where upstream service is three-phase, SmartOnline S3M is the right tier — modular hot-swap power and battery blocks for capacity expansion and N+1 redundancy.

Replacement batteries

Tripp Lite uses RBC and BP series part numbers — RBC93-2U for SU750/SU1500, RBC94-2U for SU3000RTXL2U, RBC94-3U for SU3000RT3U, RBC96-2U for SU6000RT4U. SmartOnline vs SmartPro?

SmartPro is line-interactive (2–4 ms transfer, AVR). SmartOnline is double-conversion online (zero transfer, fully regenerated). SmartOnline is required for medical, VoIP PBX, precision instrumentation.

Transfer time?

Effectively zero. Load runs continuously from inverter — no switching event when utility fails.

External battery packs?

SU-series supports BP-series external battery packs on most rack/tower SKUs. Confirm by model.

Network management?

SNMP card slot standard on SU-series. PowerAlert software ships standard for shutdown integration with Windows, Linux, VMware.

S3M three-phase — when?

When upstream is three-phase, when load exceeds ~10 kVA single-phase, or when modular hot-swap redundancy is required. Always commissioned by qualified Tripp Lite / Eaton-authorised technician.

Battery life?
