1. What is a UPS battery?

A UPS battery is a rechargeable sealed lead-acid (SLA / VRLA) battery or lithium-ion battery that powers an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system. It provides temporary backup power during outages, preventing data loss and protecting critical equipment. For UPS unit questions (sizing, topology, brand) see our UPS FAQ.

2. How long do UPS batteries last?

The lifespan of a UPS battery depends on factors like usage, temperature, and maintenance. On average:

  • Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA) UPS batteries last 3 to 5 years
  • Lithium-Ion UPS batteries can last 8 to 10 years

Regular battery maintenance and keeping the UPS in an optimal environment can help extend battery life. For TCO comparison of VRLA vs lithium-ion across 10 years, see our single-phase smart UPS comparison.

3. How do I know when my UPS battery needs to be replaced?

Signs that your UPS battery needs replacement include:

  • The UPS alerts you with a battery failure warning
  • Reduced backup runtime during power outages
  • Frequent beeping or warning lights
  • The UPS shuts down unexpectedly
  • Physical signs of battery damage, such as swelling, leaking, or corrosion

If your UPS is showing these signs, it's time to replace the battery to maintain system reliability.

4. How do I choose the right replacement UPS battery?

When replacing a UPS battery, ensure:

  • The voltage (V) and amp-hour (Ah) rating matches your current battery
  • The battery type is compatible with your UPS model
  • The physical size fits inside your UPS battery compartment
  • The OEM cartridge code matches — for APC: RBC7, RBC55, RBC44 etc.; for Eaton: 744-A2025, 744-A2026 etc.

Browse compatible cells in our all-UPS replacement battery hub or contact us and we'll help you choose the perfect replacement.

5. Can I replace just one battery in a multi-battery UPS system?

No, it's best to replace all UPS batteries in a multi-battery system at the same time. Mixing old and new batteries can cause uneven charging and premature failure of the new battery. The new cell will be charged-discharged at the rate of the weakest old cell in the string.

6. How should I maintain my UPS battery for longer life?

To extend the life of your UPS battery:

  • Keep the UPS in a cool, dry place (ideal temperature: 20–25°C) — every 8°C above 25°C halves SLA life
  • Avoid overloading the UPS beyond its power capacity
  • Perform regular UPS battery tests to ensure functionality (quarterly self-test minimum)
  • Replace UPS batteries before they fail to prevent downtime — typically at year 3.5–4 for VRLA

Regular preventive maintenance ensures your UPS system remains operational when you need it most. For multi-unit fleets we offer scheduled maintenance contracts through our parent company GDF Technologies.

7. How long will my UPS battery last during a power outage?

The backup time depends on:

  • The UPS battery capacity (Ah)
  • The power load connected to the UPS

For example, a 1500VA UPS with a standard 12V 9Ah battery may provide 5–15 minutes of backup power at full load. To increase runtime, consider using higher-capacity batteries or adding external battery packs. Estimate your specific runtime with our UPS runtime calculator.

8. Do UPS batteries need calibration?

Yes, new UPS batteries require calibration to ensure the UPS recognizes the new battery capacity. Calibration helps the UPS properly estimate runtime and battery health, improving overall performance. Most modern UPS units run an automatic calibration cycle on first use; some require a manual full-discharge calibration via PowerChute, Eaton IPM, or the unit's front panel.

9. Can I recycle my old UPS battery?

Yes. UPS batteries must be recycled properly due to their lead and acid content (lead-acid is regulated under provincial Hazardous Waste rules in Canada). Many local recycling centres and battery retailers accept used UPS batteries for proper disposal. Call2Recycle Canada operates a free drop-off network nationally.

If you're replacing your UPS battery through our UPS battery replacement service, we handle disposal of the old cells as part of the install.
