About APC Back-UPS XS Replacement Batteries

Replacement batteries for the APC Back-UPS XS series

The APC Back-UPS XS family covers a wide range of capacities, from compact 800VA desktop units through to the larger 1500VA LCD models. Every one of them runs on sealed lead-acid (SLA / VRLA) batteries that wear out over time and need periodic replacement to keep the unit protecting your equipment. This collection groups the compatible replacement battery kits for the Back-UPS XS line so you can find the right one for your model.

Battery type and how it scales across the range

Back-UPS XS units are built around 12-volt SLA cells. In nearly every model in this range, two 12V cells are wired in series to form a 24V battery cartridge — this is true of the non-LCD units (such as the BX800, BX900, BX1000 and BX1200) as well as the larger LCD models (such as the BX1300LCD and BX1500LCD). The amp-hour rating per cell varies by model, commonly in the 7 to 9 Ah range. Because the exact cell capacity and the matching cartridge differ from model to model, there is no single specification that fits every unit. Always confirm by your model number rather than by the series name alone. Each product page lists the voltage and amp-hour rating for that kit.

Identify your unit by its exact model number

Do not order by the "Back-UPS XS" name alone — match the exact model. The model number is printed on a label on the bottom or rear of the unit and usually begins with BX (for example BX800, BX900, BX1000, BX1200, BX1300LCD or BX1500LCD). Regional variants exist too, such as BX1200-CN and BX900R-CN. Match that exact string to the product title here, and use the compatible-models list and the spec block on each product page to confirm the fit before you buy.

Genuine OEM versus aftermarket batteries

APC sells genuine replacement battery cartridges (RBCs) for these units, and the correct cartridge depends on your exact model. As examples, the non-LCD Back-UPS XS models (such as BX800, BX900, BX1000 and BX1200) take APC cartridge RBC32, while the LCD models BX1300LCD and BX1500LCD take APCRBC109. Both of those cartridges are 24V assemblies built from two 12V cells in series. Aftermarket replacement kits use equivalent SLA cells of the same voltage and capacity and are designed as compatible drop-in replacements, typically at a lower price. Both restore your UPS to full runtime when correctly matched. The kits in this collection are aftermarket compatible replacements; choose based on your budget and warranty preference, and always match the voltage and amp-hour rating to your unit.

Battery lifespan and what shortens it

SLA UPS batteries typically last about 3 to 5 years. Heat is the single biggest factor: as a rule of thumb, battery life is roughly halved for every 8°C (about 15°F) of sustained temperature above 25°C (77°F). Keep the UPS in a cool, ventilated spot away from heat sources and direct sun. If your unit beeps about a battery fault, shows a reduced runtime, or fails its self-test, the battery is usually due for replacement.

How to replace the battery

The Back-UPS XS is a desktop/tower unit, not a rack-mount or online/Smart-UPS model, so it is not designed for hot-swapping. Power down and disconnect before you open it:

  1. Turn off the UPS and unplug it from the wall outlet.
  2. Disconnect the equipment plugged into the unit.
  3. Open the battery compartment (usually a panel on the bottom or rear).
  4. Slide out the old battery and disconnect the wiring harness or terminals.
  5. Connect the new battery, observing correct polarity, and seat it fully.
  6. Close the compartment, plug the UPS back in, and let it charge fully (often up to 24 hours) before relying on it.

Hot-swapping — changing the battery while the unit stays powered — is only appropriate for rack-mount, Smart-UPS, and online (double-conversion) units that are explicitly designed for it. It is not appropriate for desktop Back-UPS models.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which battery kit my unit needs?
Match the exact model number printed on your UPS (for example BX1300LCD) to the product title and the compatible-models list. The voltage and amp-hour rating on each product page confirms the fit.

Are these the same as the genuine APC battery?
These are aftermarket compatible replacement kits built to the same voltage and capacity as the original. They are not the genuine APC-branded RBC, but they serve as a drop-in equivalent.

How long will the new battery last?
Typically 3 to 5 years, depending on temperature and how often the unit runs on battery. Heat shortens life significantly.

Can I replace the battery while the UPS stays on?
No. Back-UPS XS units are not hot-swappable. Power down and unplug before replacing the battery.

Do I need to recycle the old battery?
Yes. Sealed lead-acid batteries are recyclable and should not go in household waste. Most battery retailers and recycling depots accept them.
