What is an industrial UPS?

Industrial UPS protects loads in environments where power events translate to lost production — SCADA control rooms, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), CNC and motion-control systems, process-industry sensors and actuators, water and wastewater plants, transportation control, and oil-and-gas field equipment. Industrial UPS prioritises galvanic isolation, wide input voltage tolerance, hard-wired terminal connections, three-phase support, and chassis hardened for harsher ambient conditions.

Eaton's industrial-grade catalog has four tiers: single-phase 9PX 5–22 kVA on 208/230 V and 9SX 8–11 kVA for control-room and skid-mounted equipment; three-phase 93E 20–60 kVA for mid-enterprise; 93PM 30–500 kVA modular for data-centre and large facility; and 9395 / 9395P 200 kW–2.25 MW for hyperscale and heavy industrial. Eaton industrial families

For most control-room and skid deployments under 22 kVA the answer is 9PX. Above that, 93E covers 20–60 kVA at lower cost, 93PM scales to 500 kVA with modular hot-swap, and 9395 covers true hyperscale.

How to choose

Online double-conversion is mandatory

Industrial PLCs, motion drives, and instrumentation generally cannot tolerate the 2–4 ms transfer of line-interactive — even brief gaps cause control-loop interruptions. Single-phase vs three-phase

Most control-room and skid equipment runs single-phase 208/230 V — 9PX 5–22 kVA covers this tier. Three-phase 93E starts at 20 kVA. Choose three-phase when upstream service is three-phase or when load exceeds ~22 kVA single-phase.

Sizing for industrial inrush

Industrial loads (motor drives, contactors, solenoids) often have inrush currents 6–10× nominal. Add nameplate watts × 1.25 buffer for steady-state, then verify the UPS's overload tolerance against expected inrush. 9PX, 93PM, and 9395 tolerate higher transient overload than IT-class UPS. Battery runtime

Most industrial deployments size battery runtime for graceful shutdown of the controlled process — typically 15–30 minutes. 9PX supports EBMs (9PXEBM240RT, 9PXEBM480T) for runtime extension; 93PM and 9395 use external battery cabinets configured at install.

9PX vs 93E for 20 kVA?

9PX22K is single-phase 208/230 V — fits sites with single-phase distribution. 93E 20K is three-phase 208/220 V at up to 98 % efficiency — fits sites where upstream is already three-phase. Choose by upstream service, not by VA alone.

93PM — when to spec?

When you need modular three-phase 30–500 kVA with hot-swappable power and battery blocks for capacity expansion or N+1 redundancy. Always commissioned by Eaton — request a site survey before order.

9395 — when to spec?

Hyperscale data centres and large industrial / institutional installations needing 200 kW – 2.25 MW. Capital infrastructure project with extended commissioning lead times.

Inrush handling?
