About Rack PDUs (Power Distribution Units)
What a rack PDU does
A rack power distribution unit (PDU) takes one feed — from a UPS or the wall — and splits it into many outlets for the equipment in your rack. Beyond basic distribution, metered and switched PDUs let you measure load and control outlets remotely, which protects your UPS from overload and helps you balance circuits.
This collection covers horizontal (1U/2U) and vertical (0U) PDUs from APC, Eaton, Vertiv, CyberPower and Tripp Lite. PDUs are largely UPS-agnostic — choose by input plug, outlet mix, phase and amperage, and confirm they fit your rack.
PDU types
| Type | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Basic | Reliable distribution only — multiple outlets from one feed |
| Metered (inlet) | Local display of total load so you don't overload the circuit or UPS |
| Monitored / metered-by-outlet | Remote per-outlet power data over the network (SNMP/web) |
| Switched | Remote on/off and reboot of individual outlets |
| ATS (automatic transfer switch) PDU | Two inputs for redundant power to single-corded devices |
How to choose
1. Input plug & amperage
Match the PDU input to your source receptacle and circuit — e.g. C14/C20 cord-connected, or NEMA L5-30/L6-30 for higher-capacity feeds. The PDU rating must suit the breaker and the UPS output.
2. Phase
Most racks are single-phase; dense or large deployments may use three-phase. Match the PDU to your facility feed.
3. Outlets and form factor
Count the C13 and C19 outlets you need, then pick 0U vertical (saves U-space) or 1U/2U horizontal. Add metering or switching only where you'll use it.
Installation & specs
0U PDUs mount in the rack's vertical channels; horizontal PDUs take 1U–2U. Keep the total connected load within both the PDU rating and the upstream UPS capacity — our runtime & load calculator helps you total it. Confirm input connector, outlet types and rack depth before ordering.
FAQ
Basic vs switched PDU — which do I need?
Choose basic for simple, reliable distribution. Choose metered to watch load, monitored for remote data, or switched if you need to power-cycle outlets remotely (e.g. reboot a hung device without a site visit).
0U vertical or horizontal?
0U vertical PDUs mount in the rack frame and free up U-space; horizontal units are easier to reach and suit shallow or open racks.
Can I plug a PDU into my UPS?
Yes — that's common. Just keep the PDU's connected load within the UPS's output capacity and match the connectors.
Single-phase or three-phase?
Most racks use single-phase. Three-phase suits high-density racks fed by a three-phase circuit. Match the PDU to your facility power.
