About UPS Transfer Switches & Maintenance Bypass
What transfer switches and maintenance bypass do
Transfer switches and maintenance-bypass units add resilience around your UPS. A transfer switch gives single-corded equipment a second power source; a maintenance bypass lets you isolate and service (or replace) the UPS without dropping the protected load. Together they remove two common single points of failure.
This collection covers rack transfer switches and bypass panels from APC, Eaton, Vertiv and Tripp Lite. Match input/output connectors, amperage and phase to your UPS and circuits.
Types
| Type | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rack ATS (automatic transfer switch) | Feeds single-corded devices from two sources; switches automatically if one fails |
| STS (static transfer switch) | Fast, solid-state source switching for sensitive loads |
| Maintenance bypass panel / switch | Routes power around the UPS so it can be serviced or swapped with no downtime |
How to choose
1. Amperage and phase
Size the switch to the load and circuit — single-phase for most racks, three-phase for larger systems. The rating must cover the full connected load.
2. Connectors
Match input and output connectors to your sources and downstream PDU/equipment (IEC C13/C19, NEMA, or hardwired).
3. Automatic vs manual
Use an ATS/STS where you need automatic failover; a manual maintenance bypass is enough where the goal is serviceability without downtime.
Installation & specs
Rack ATS and bypass units typically mount in 1U–2U. Plan the wiring path from both sources and confirm the switch rating exceeds the protected load. For maintenance bypass, verify the procedure matches your UPS model so transfers are make-before-break (no load drop).
FAQ
ATS vs STS — what's the difference?
Both switch between two sources. An ATS suits general redundancy; a static transfer switch (STS) is solid-state and switches faster for sensitive loads.
Why give single-corded devices two sources?
Many switches and appliances have only one power inlet. A rack ATS feeds them from two independent sources, so losing one feed doesn't take the device down.
Do I need a maintenance bypass?
If the UPS protects loads that can't go down for service, a maintenance bypass lets you isolate, service or replace the UPS while power keeps flowing.
How do I confirm fit?
Match amperage, phase and connectors to your UPS and circuits. If unsure, send us your setup and we'll confirm.
Automatic/static transfer switches and maintenance bypass units add redundancy and serviceability.
