Eaton 9PX Battery Replacement: Which Battery Fits Your 9PX UPS?
Short answer: an Eaton 9PX takes the battery pack Eaton lists for its exact model, and the string voltage changes with the model, not only with the VA rating. The 9PX700RT and 9PX1000RT use a 36 V pack, the 9PX1000GRT and the 1500 VA models a 48 V pack, the 2U models from 9PX2000 to 9PX3000 a 72 V pack, the 9PX3K3UN, 9PX5K and 9PX6K a 180 V pack, and the 8 and 11 kVA models a 240 V string supplied as two cartridges [1][2][3]. Tables 1 and 2 give the part numbers.
If your 9PX shows its four-year battery replacement notice or fails a battery test, Tables 1 and 2 tell you what to order. This guide is for IT staff and facility technicians who must order a replacement battery for an Eaton 9PX online UPS and want the right pack the first time. It covers the North American 9PX models sold in Canada, from the 9PX700RT to the 9PX11K, including the two G2 models Eaton documents with a battery pack, and their extended battery modules (EBMs). It does not cover lithium-ion models (catalogue numbers ending in -L), international 230 V models (an "I" in the catalogue number) or the 9SX family. Eaton figures in Tables 1 to 3 come from Eaton's product pages, specification sheets and manual, listed under Sources and read on 16 October 2026. Table 4 lists our own products, which are aftermarket unless marked as Eaton's part.
Find your exact 9PX model first
The rating label on the rear panel shows the full catalogue number. Copy it exactly, because three suffixes change the battery:
- RT versus GRT. The 9PX1000RT (120 V) runs a 36 V string; the 9PX1000GRT (208 V) runs a 48 V string with a different pack [1].
- G2. The 9PX6KG2 and 9PX11KG2 use different packs from the first-generation 9PX6K and 9PX11K (Table 2) [1].
- -L. A lithium-ion 9PX has its own battery modules and is outside this guide.
Eaton's 9PX 1-3 kVA manual also places the recommended battery replacement date on the front display, under Measurements > Battery [6]. The unit warns when the batteries reach four years of operation [6].
9PX 700 VA to 3 kVA: battery by model
Every model in Table 1 takes one internal pack, which slides out through the front battery door. Each pack can also be found under two Eaton catalogue numbers, explained in the next section.
| Model | VA / W | Internal string (Eaton) | Eaton pack | EBM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9PX700RT | 700 / 630 | 36 V, 7 Ah, 252 Wh | EBP-1611 = 744-A3960 | 9PXEBM36RT |
| 9PX1000RT | 1000 / 900 | 36 V, 7 Ah, 252 Wh | EBP-1611 = 744-A3960 | 9PXEBM36RT |
| 9PX1000GRT | 1000 / 900 | 48 V, 7 Ah, 336 Wh | EBP-1612 = 744-A3296 | 9PXEBM48RT |
| 9PX1500RT, 9PX1500RTN, 9PX1500GRT | 1500 / 1350 | 48 V, 9 Ah, 432 Wh | EBP-1613 = 744-A3297 | 9PXEBM48RT |
| 9PX2000RT, 9PX2000RTN | 2000 / 1800 | 72 V, 9 Ah, 648 Wh (see note) | EBP-1616 = 744-A3121 | 9PXEBM72RT |
| 9PX2200GRT | 2200 / 2000 | 72 V, 9 Ah, 648 Wh | EBP-1616 = 744-A3121 | 9PXEBM72RT |
| 9PX3000RT, 9PX3000RTN | 3000 / 2700 | 72 V, 9 Ah, 648 Wh | EBP-1617 = 744-A3122 | 9PXEBM72RT |
| 9PX3000GRT, 9PX3000GLRT | 3000 / 3000 | 72 V, 9 Ah, 648 Wh | EBP-1617 = 744-A3122 | 9PXEBM72RT |
The watt-hour figures are Eaton's and follow from voltage times capacity: 48 V x 9 Ah = 432 Wh for a 1500 VA model, against 48 V x 7 Ah = 336 Wh for the 9PX1000GRT. The 1500 VA pack holds about 29% more nominal energy (432 / 336 = 1.29). The two 48 V packs are separate Eaton parts even though they share an EBM.
One discrepancy is worth knowing. Eaton's specification sheet for the 9PX2000RT and 9PX2000RTN prints "DC System Voltage 48" [2], while Eaton's product page for the same models gives 72 V dc, 9 Ah, 648 Wh [1], and the pack it names, 744-A3121, is also the pack of the 72 V EBM [3][5]. Our reading is that the 2000 VA models run a 72 V string and that the 48 V entry is inconsistent with Eaton's product page. The part number is what you order either way.
9PX 3 kVA to 11 kVA: battery by model
The larger 9PX models use high-voltage strings. Eaton's first-generation sheets name one 744-A1974 cartridge for the 180 V models and two 744-A1976 cartridges for the 240 V models [2][3].
| Model group | String | Eaton cartridge | Per UPS | EBM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9PX3K3UN, 3K3UNP1, 3K3UNP2, 3K3UNTF5 | 180 V | 744-A1974 | 1 | 9PXEBM180RT |
| 9PX5K, 5KP1, 5KP2, 5KTF5 | 180 V | 744-A1974 | 1 | 9PXEBM180RT |
| 9PX6K, 6KUS, 6K-10, 6KP1, 6KP2, 6KTF5 | 180 V | 744-A1974 | 1 | 9PXEBM180RT |
| 9PX8K, 8KHW, 8KPM, 8KTF5 | 240 V | 744-A1976 | 2 | 9PXEBM240RT |
| 9PX11K, 11KHW, 11KPM, 11KTF11, 11KTF11M, 11KTF5 | 240 V | 744-A1976 | 2 | 9PXEBM240RT |
| 9PX6KG2 | 180 V, 5 Ah, 900 Wh | EBP-1805 | 1 | 9PXEBM180RTG2 |
| 9PX11KG2 | 240 V, 9 Ah, 2160 Wh | EBP-2003 | 2 | 9PXEBM240RTG2 |
Two details trip buyers here. First, the G2 models do not take the first-generation cartridges: Eaton names EBP-1805 for the 9PX6KG2 and EBP-2003 for the 9PX11KG2 [1]. Second, Eaton's current sheets for new 9PX3K3UN, 9PX5K and 9PX6K units point to the newer 9PXEBM180RTG2 module with a CBLADAPT180RT adapter cable for added runtime [1][2]. The original 9PXEBM180RT lists the same models and still takes 744-A1974 cartridges [5]. On the 9PX8K, Eaton's sheet pairs the 9PXEBM240RT with a CBLADAPT240RT adapter [2]. These are 180 V and 240 V strings: plan the work with someone qualified for that voltage.
Two Eaton part numbers, one pack
Search results for a 9PX battery mix two numbering systems. Eaton's own site lists the packs as "9PX battery pack" EBP-16xx, while Eaton's Tripp Lite site lists the same packs as 744-series internal replacement battery cartridges. We compared the UPC barcode numbers Eaton publishes for each. Five pairs match exactly, so they are the same product under two names.
| eaton.com | 744-series | UPC (both pages) | Used with |
|---|---|---|---|
| EBP-1611 | 744-A3960 | 743172089731 | 9PX700RT, 9PX1000RT |
| EBP-1612 | 744-A3296 | 743172089748 | 9PX1000GRT |
| EBP-1613 | 744-A3297 | 743172089762 | 9PX1500RT, RTN, GRT; 9PXEBM48RT |
| EBP-1616 | 744-A3121 | 743172089779 | 9PX2000RT, RTN; 9PX2200GRT; 9PXEBM72RT |
| EBP-1617 | 744-A3122 | 743172089786 | 9PX3000RT, RTN, GRT, GLRT |
The two pages do not always agree on the "used with" list. Eaton's EBP-1612 page also names the 5PX1000RTG2, while the 744-A3296 sheet says "compatible only with" the 9PX1000GRT [3][4]. When the lists differ, order against the narrower one or ask us first.
Packs that look alike but are not interchangeable
The 2000/2200 VA pack (EBP-1616) and the 3000 VA pack (EBP-1617) carry the same Eaton string data (72 V, 9 Ah, 648 Wh), and Eaton gives both the same dimensions, 18.31 x 8.27 x 2.64 in, and the same weight, 34.8 lb [3][4]. Eaton still assigns them to different models. We treat them as separate parts because Eaton does, and we do not suggest swapping one for the other.
The same applies across sizes with equal VA. A 9PX1000RT and a 9PX1000GRT are both 1000 VA, but one runs 36 V and the other 48 V [1]. A 36 V pack in a 48 V unit, or the reverse, is the wrong battery. Eaton's manual is explicit: replace with the same type and number of batteries or battery packs [6].
Extended battery modules: two cartridges per module
Each EBM is a separate chassis that plugs into the UPS battery connector and a battery detection cable. Eaton's sheets state that each first-generation 9PX EBM needs two replacement cartridges, and they name the cartridge [5]:
- 9PXEBM36RT (700RT and 1000RT): two 744-A3959 cartridges, a different part from the UPS pack.
- 9PXEBM48RT (1000GRT and 1500 VA): two 744-A3297, the same pack as the 1500 VA UPS.
- 9PXEBM72RT (2000 to 3000 VA): two 744-A3121, the 2000/2200 VA pack, even when the EBM serves a 3000 VA UPS.
- 9PXEBM180RT: two 744-A1974. 9PXEBM240RT: two 744-A1976.
Up to four EBMs connect to the first-generation 700 VA to 6 kVA models; the first-generation 240 V models accept five, or up to 12 with Eaton's SC240RT supercharger [1][2][5]. Count your batteries per stack, not per UPS: a 9PX3000RT with two EBMs needs one 744-A3122 for the UPS plus four 744-A3121 for the modules. Eaton's runtime table shows what that buys: at 1620 W, a 9PX3000RT runs 10.7 minutes on its internal pack and 43 minutes with one EBM [7]. A 9PX1500RT at 900 W runs 11.2 minutes internally and 44.2 minutes with one EBM [7]. Those figures assume new, fully charged batteries; Eaton notes that runtime varies with battery age and temperature [7].
Replacing the pack: what Eaton's manual requires
Eaton's cartridge sheets describe the packs as hot-swappable [3], and the 9PX 1-3 kVA manual states that the batteries can be replaced without turning off the UPS or disconnecting the load, and the batteries must not be disconnected while the UPS is in Battery mode [6]. The swap, in Eaton's order, is: remove the centre front cover, slide the left cover, open the battery door, disconnect the battery connectors (without pulling on the display ribbon cable, which Eaton says must stay connected), remove the two screws of the metal protection cover, slide the pack out with both hands, check that the new pack has the same rating, push it in firmly, refit the covers, then test [6]. While the pack is out, the load has no battery reserve, so choose a quiet moment.
Eaton's precautions for this work: remove watches and rings, use tools with insulated handles, do not lay tools on the batteries, wear rubber gloves and boots, and do not alter battery wiring or connectors [6]. Eaton states that servicing should be performed by qualified service personnel knowledgeable of batteries, with unauthorized people kept away [6].
After the swap, Eaton asks for a 48-hour charge before testing. The test is started from the display under Control > Start battery test; the UPS switches to Battery mode and discharges the batteries for 25 seconds [6]. Eaton's storage section notes that the internal batteries reach 90% charge in less than three hours; for a full test, follow the 48-hour instruction [6].
How long a 9PX battery lasts
Eaton's 9PX 1-3 kVA manual rates the batteries for a three to five year service life and recommends replacing them at least every four years [6]. Temperature drives the range: Eaton's manual states that life is divided by two for each 10 °C above 25 °C [6]. A pack expected to reach four years in a 25 °C room would reach about two years at a steady 35 °C (4 / 2 = 2), by Eaton's rule. In Canadian buildings, a closet beside a boiler room in winter or an unventilated rack in summer is where that happens.
Two signals deserve action before the four-year reminder: a failed automatic battery test, and a runtime estimate that drops well below what the unit showed when new. Eaton's automatic test runs weekly in constant charging mode, or at each charging cycle in ABM mode [6].

One departure needs a decision from you. Our 36 V sets use 9 Ah blocks where Eaton rates 7 Ah, and Eaton's manual asks for the same type of battery [6]. A higher-capacity block can change runtime and recharge time, and it may affect an Eaton warranty claim. If staying on Eaton's rating matters at your site, contact us before ordering. This collection does not list a battery for the first-generation 9PX8K and 9PX11K (744-A1976), the 9PX6KG2 (EBP-1805), or the 9PXEBM36RT, 9PXEBM180RT and 9PXEBM240RT modules; ask us. For 180 V and 240 V systems, or a site that cannot risk the swap, an on-site UPS battery replacement service can do the work and the post-swap test. For battery terminal types, see our F1 vs F2 terminal guide; for the smaller line-interactive family, see which battery fits an Eaton 5PX; for runtime planning with modules, see our 9PX EBM runtime case study. Complete units are in the Eaton 9PX UPS collection.
