About APC Back-UPS Replacement Batteries

What is an APC Back-UPS replacement battery?

The Back-UPS family — entry Back-UPS BE / BX / BVN and line-interactive Back-UPS Pro BR / BX — uses sealed lead-acid (SLA) cartridges in a defined APCRBC (APC Replacement Battery Cartridge) configuration. The cartridge is replaceable when the cells reach end of service life (typically 3–5 years in 20–25 °C ambient). UPSPLUSBATTERY.CA stocks the full Back-UPS cartridge line — both genuine APC and compatible aftermarket equivalents.

For Smart-UPS line-interactive cartridges (APCRBC123, 132, 133, 143, 124, RBC43, RBC55, etc.), see APC Smart-UPS replacement batteries. For Smart-UPS SRT and Smart-UPS Ultra (APCRBC140, 141, 152, 155, SRTL180RM2UBP), see APC Smart-UPS RT replacement batteries. For the full APC battery catalog see APC RBC batteries.

Cartridge spec is on the unit label (typically the side or back of the chassis) and listed in the user manual. If the label is worn off, send the model number to our team and we'll cross-reference — replies within 1 business day.

How to identify the right cartridge

Method 1: unit label

Every Back-UPS has a label listing the model number and compatible APCRBC. This is the definitive reference — if the label says APCRBC124, that's the part you need.

Method 2: existing cartridge

Open the battery door and read the label on the existing cartridge. Lists cell count, voltage, and Ah — match to the same configuration in stock.

Method 3: model number lookup

Use the cross-reference table above. APC publishes the same mapping in the user manual and on schneider-electric.com.

Genuine APC vs compatible aftermarket

Two categories sit under the APCRBC umbrella for Back-UPS. Both power the UPS correctly.

Genuine APC: OEM cartridge with factory tested-date sticker, full APC warranty (typically 2 years matching the unit's battery warranty), guaranteed compatibility with PowerChute Personal Edition runtime estimation. Required if the UPS is in active APC warranty.

Compatible aftermarket: Identical form factor, identical connector, identical voltage stack, built from reputable SLA cells (CSB, Yuasa, BB Battery, Panasonic). Typically 30–50 % less than genuine. 1-year UPSPLUSBATTERY warranty. Suitable for out-of-warranty units being maintained at minimum cost.

How long do Back-UPS batteries last?

APC rates SLA Back-UPS cartridges for 3–5 years of service life in a climate-controlled environment (20–25 °C ambient). Three factors shorten life:

  • Ambient temperature. Every 8 °C above 25 °C roughly halves life.
  • Discharge cycles. Frequent outages or unattended self-tests consume service life.
  • Float voltage and charging algorithm. APC's temperature-compensated charging extends cell life on genuine cartridges.

Front-panel LED on most Back-UPS, and PowerChute Personal Edition, flag the battery once internal impedance crosses the threshold. Replace promptly — the UPS continues to power the load but rated runtime is no longer guaranteed. Read when to replace UPS battery.

Installation

Most Back-UPS use bottom-access or rear-access cartridges. Procedure:

  1. Order the correct APCRBC for the model.
  2. Slide the cartridge door open (some BX / BR models have a screw-fastened cover).
  3. Disconnect the polarised battery plug.
  4. Slide old cartridge out, slide new one in.
  5. Reconnect the polarised plug until it clicks.
  6. Close the door and (where supported) reset the install date via the front panel or PowerChute.

Total swap takes ~5 minutes. Recycle the old cartridge at any municipal hazardous-waste depot, Call2Recycle drop-off, or return to us with your new cartridge for free recycling. Read how to install UPS battery.

Warranty and support

Genuine APC cartridges ship with the standard APC battery warranty (typically 2 years). Compatible aftermarket cartridges carry our 1-year UPSPLUSBATTERY full-replacement warranty. Coordinated through our Canadian team. Shipped from our Canadian warehouse — see shipping policy for rates and timing. Replies within 1 business day on cartridge cross-reference questions.

FAQ

What does APCRBC stand for?

APC Replacement Battery Cartridge. The factory part-numbering system APC uses for every approved replacement cartridge across Back-UPS, Smart-UPS, and SRT.

How do I find which APCRBC I need?

Check the unit label on the side or back of the Back-UPS. The compatible APCRBC is listed there. Alternatively, use the cross-reference table above or contact our team with the model number.

Aftermarket vs genuine — does it matter?

For an in-warranty unit: yes, use genuine. For an out-of-warranty unit being maintained at minimum cost: aftermarket performs identically and costs 30–50 % less.

How often should I replace?

Every 3–5 years in climate-controlled environment, earlier in hot ambient. Replace immediately when the front-panel LED or PowerChute flags battery as "replace."

Can I install it myself?

Yes — Back-UPS cartridges are user-replaceable. ~5-minute swap with no tools on most models. How to install UPS battery.

Battery warranty?

Genuine APC: 2-year APC battery warranty. Compatible aftermarket: 1-year full-replacement UPSPLUSBATTERY warranty.

Disposal?

Sealed lead-acid cartridges are fully recyclable and should not go in household trash. Drop at any municipal hazardous-waste depot, Call2Recycle collection point, or ship back to us for free recycling.
