Comparison

Refurbished UPS systems, professionally restored and tested before they ship. Every unit gets new batteries, a full diagnostic under load, and a UPS Plus Battery warranty. Stock covers APC Smart-UPS, Smart-UPS RT and SRT, Back-UPS Pro, Dell branded Smart-UPS, Tripp Lite SmartPro and SmartOnline, Eaton 5P, 5PX, 9PX and 9SX, and Vertiv Liebert GXT, from 750 VA desktop units to rack systems above 10 kVA.

The reasoning is simple: a UPS chassis, its transformer and its inverter electronics commonly serve 10 to 15 years, while the battery string ages out in 3 to 5 years. Replace the batteries on a sound platform and you get a unit that performs like new for a fraction of new cost. Refurbished pricing typically lands well below the equivalent new model, and the gap is largest on the older rack families that are still in wide service.

What refurbished means here

A refurbished UPS is a returned, off lease or decommissioned unit that has been stripped of its worn parts, rebuilt and proven under load. It is not a used unit resold as found. Every unit in this collection goes through the same sequence before it is listed: intake inspection, battery replacement, capacitor and fan check, firmware review where the platform allows it, then a load test that confirms the unit carries rated output and transfers cleanly to battery.

What arrives is a unit with a new battery string, a documented test result, and a warranty from us. What you do not get is a factory box and the newest generation firmware feature set. For most buyers protecting a rack, a closet or a small room, that trade is worth making.

Why the platform outlives the battery

The parts that decide a UPS lifespan wear at very different rates. Batteries are the fast wear item: sealed lead acid strings are rated around 25 degrees Celsius and give 3 to 5 years in a conditioned room, and sustained heat above that rating shortens the window substantially. Electrolytic capacitors and fans are mid life items, typically addressed once during a unit service life. The transformer, the chassis and the power electronics are the long life parts, and they often outlast several battery strings.

That is why a refurbished unit with a new string can still have years of useful service ahead of it, and why the honest question is not new against refurbished, but how many years of runtime you need and whether parts are still available for the family you are buying.

How to choose a refurbished unit

  1. Total the load in watts. Read the rack PDU if you have one, otherwise sum equipment nameplates, then add 20 to 25 percent headroom.
  2. Set the runtime you need. Five to ten minutes covers an orderly shutdown or a generator start. Longer runtime means external battery packs, which take rack space and add weight.
  3. Choose the topology. Line interactive suits switches and access points. Online double conversion suits servers, storage and anything downstream of a generator.
  4. Confirm the format fits. Rack units need depth as well as U space, and heavy units belong low in the cabinet.
  5. Check parts availability. On older families, ask before you buy. We flag units where replacement parts are getting scarce.

Refurbished against new

Choose refurbished when the budget matters more than the warranty term, when you are matching an installed fleet so spares and procedures stay common, when you need a discontinued model to keep a working configuration intact, or when you want a spare on the shelf without paying new prices for equipment that will sit idle.

Choose new when the site requires a full manufacturer warranty, when you need current generation efficiency modes and monitoring, or when the equipment is going into a location where a service call is expensive and you want the longest possible interval before the first one.

Service after the sale

A refurbished unit still needs the same care as a new one. Batteries remain the wear item and the first thing to test. Annual preventive maintenance with battery impedance readings catches a weak cell before it becomes an outage, and it matters more on a rebuilt unit because you inherit the platform history rather than starting from zero. Service across Canada is available through our service partner, whether the unit came from us or not.

FAQ

Do refurbished UPS units come with new batteries?

Yes. Every unit gets a new matched sealed lead acid string with the install date recorded, because the battery is the part that actually ages out.

How long will a refurbished UPS last?

The platform commonly has years of service left, since chassis, transformer and power electronics are the long life parts. The new battery string then follows the normal 3 to 5 year cycle in a conditioned room.

Is there a warranty?

Yes, a UPS Plus Battery warranty on the unit, coordinated by our Canadian team. It covers the unit rather than the original manufacturer warranty, which does not transfer on refurbished equipment.

How much do refurbished units save?

Compare the current price on each product page with the equivalent new model; quantity requests are quoted.

Can you install it?

Yes. Our service partner handles delivery coordination, electrical installation, commissioning with a load and transfer test, and the maintenance plan afterward, across Canada.

What if the model I need is not listed?

Refurbished stock moves, and units sell before the listing does. Send the model number and the load you are protecting and we will tell you what is on the floor or arriving.

Do you take my old units?

Batteries and end of life equipment go to a regulated recycling stream. See battery recycling for how that works.
