Why scheduled maintenance matters
Vertiv modelled the reliability of three-phase UPS units from its own service records. Its model projects a mean time between failures 23 times higher for units with two preventive maintenance visits a year than for a unit with none. This is Vertiv's estimate, not a field count.
The data covered 185 million operating hours for more than 5,000 three-phase UPS units, and more than 450 million operating hours for more than 24,000 battery strings. Two findings matter when you book visits: the gain from more visits held only when the technician's error rate was very low, and Vertiv reports no system outages from bad batteries on systems where the batteries were professionally maintained and remotely monitored. Vertiv calls the analysis a preliminary look, not an all-encompassing conclusion.
NFPA 70B also changed in 2023. The American standard for electrical equipment maintenance moved from recommendations to mandatory language about putting an electrical maintenance program in place.
