How it works

Three steps. No surprises.

01

We schedule it

An annual visit, or a contract if you have more than one site.

02

We inspect it

Battery impedance testing to IEEE 450/1188, thermal scan, alarm and firmware review.

03

You get a report

Written, saying what needs replacing and when — not just a tick in a box.

UPS Preventive Maintenance Services: Ensure Peak Performance and Reliability

Our team of highly qualified technicians provides comprehensive preventive maintenance for UPS systems to ensure they operate at peak efficiency and according to the highest standards. Preventive maintenance is crucial for identifying and addressing potential issues before they cause downtime, helping you maintain uninterrupted power for your business.

The biggest cost of UPS ownership over a 10-year horizon is battery replacement plus the cost of unplanned downtime. Both are dramatically reduced by scheduled preventive maintenance — swelling batteries are caught before they fail, fan and capacitor wear is replaced before cascade failures, and firmware drift is corrected before it causes incompatibility with monitoring stacks.

Certified UPS Maintenance Services

1. Functional Check

During each preventive maintenance session, our technician performs thorough tests to ensure the UPS system is functioning properly according to the manufacturer's specifications. Live load testing, transfer-time verification, and inverter output validation are all part of the standard check. This proactive approach helps identify potential issues before they escalate into system failures.

2. Battery Testing & Replacement Planning

Battery testing is the single most important PM activity — batteries are the wear item on a UPS, typically lasting 3–5 years for VRLA / SLA cells and 8–10 years for lithium-ion. We perform:

  • Quarterly self-test verification (minimum cadence)
  • Annual impedance testing per IEEE 450/1188 standards — catches weakening cells before they drag down the rest of the string
  • Capacity testing for mission-critical sites where you need to confirm actual runtime, not just self-test pass
  • Replacement scheduling at year 3.5–4 for VRLA in 24/7 deployments — don't wait for failure, plan ahead. See our UPS battery replacement service.
  • Disposal of old cells per provincial Hazardous Waste rules — lead-acid batteries cannot go in regular trash. Call2Recycle Canada drop-off network handled as part of our service.

3. Consumables Replacement

We assess system components such as air filters, humidifier cylinders, belts, pulleys, and contactors for wear and tear. Any parts nearing the end of their lifespan will be replaced or repaired to ensure uninterrupted performance and safety. Replacement battery cartridges (APC RBC, Eaton 744-series, Vertiv GXT, Tripp Lite RBC) are stocked in our all-UPS replacement battery hub.

4. Firmware Updates

All of our preventive maintenance contracts include firmware updates. Keeping firmware up to date is essential for optimizing the UPS system's performance and ensuring compatibility with evolving technologies. We handle PowerChute (APC), Eaton IPM, Vertiv RDU101 IS-UNITY, and other vendor-specific tooling.

5. Environmental Inspection

Our technicians conduct a site inspection to verify that your UPS system is installed in a safe, appropriate environment. Identifying environmental risks, such as excessive heat (every 8°C above 25°C halves SLA battery life), moisture, dust contamination, or vibration, is critical to preventing potential damage to your equipment. For harsh-environment context, see our Nunavut mining case study.

Corrective Maintenance Services

Preventive maintenance is complemented by proactively scheduled maintenance visits to address any issues identified during the inspection and testing process. By tackling these problems early, we help extend the lifespan of your UPS system and ensure reliability. Where we install an external maintenance-bypass switch (recommended for any business-critical install) corrective work happens without interrupting the protected load when the maintenance-bypass design, equipment condition and approved site procedure permit — see our Montreal General Hospital case study for an example install topology.

When an inspection identifies a fault that requires bench testing, see our bench UPS diagnostic and repair service.

Preventive Maintenance Scheduling and Emergency Support

Preventive maintenance windows are scheduled for the site and confirmed in the service arrangement. 24/7 emergency support is available through our service partner GDF Technologies; response, technician coverage, and site terms are confirmed for the service arrangement.

UPS Calibration for New Batteries

Proper UPS calibration is essential for optimizing new battery performance and longevity. Our technicians use manufacturer-provided diagrams to adjust calibration values precisely. This ensures the system operates efficiently and helps extend battery life by up to five years. Calibration is run via the host UPS's tooling — PowerChute Personal/Business Edition for APC, Eaton IPM for 5P/9PX/93PM, Vertiv RDU101 IS-UNITY for Liebert GXT5/EXM, or the unit's front-panel for older systems.
