The APC Smart-UPS X (SMX) family is a range of line-interactive UPS systems built for server rooms, network closets, and edge deployments where racked and tower-mounted equipment need clean, protected power. Across this collection the systems run from 750 VA / 600 W up to 3000 VA / 2700 W, all using line-interactive topology with pure sine wave output and all supporting extended runtime through add-on battery packs. Smart-UPS X sits above the entry-level Back-UPS and standard Smart-UPS tiers in the APC lineup: it is the “X” (eXtended runtime, convertible form factor) range that customers choose when they need long backup times and the flexibility to mount the same unit in a rack or stand it as a tower.

How to choose a Smart-UPS X

VA vs. watts (sizing). A UPS is rated two ways: apparent power (VA) and real power (watts). Your load must stay under both figures. In this series the watt rating is the binding limit for most IT loads — e.g. a 3000 VA SMX is rated 2700 W. Add up the watt draw of everything you plan to plug in, then add roughly 20–25% headroom and pick a model whose wattage comfortably exceeds that total. Sizing by watts (not just VA) keeps you from overloading a unit that looks big enough on the VA label.

Runtime expectations. The runtime columns above show how long each model holds up at half load and at full load on its internal batteries. Heavier loads mean shorter runtime — that is why full-load minutes are well below half-load minutes. If you need to ride through longer outages or bridge to a generator, every Smart-UPS X in this range is extended-runtime capable: you add matching external battery packs to multiply runtime.

Topology. The Smart-UPS X range is line-interactive. Line-interactive UPS units regulate voltage (AVR) and switch to battery in a few milliseconds, with pure sine wave output that is safe for active-PFC server power supplies and sensitive electronics. This is the right topology for most server-room, networking, and edge workloads. For mission-critical loads that cannot tolerate any transfer time at all, a double-conversion online UPS is the alternative class — but for the great majority of rack and tower deployments, line-interactive Smart-UPS X is the practical, cost-effective choice.

Rack vs. tower. Every model here is rack/tower convertible. Units occupy 2U or 4U when racked, and ship with feet so the same chassis can stand as a tower in a closet or under a desk. Choose 2U where rack space is tight; 4U models generally pack more battery for longer internal runtime.
