About the APC Smart-UPS X series

The APC Smart-UPS X (SMX) family is a range of line-interactive UPS systems built for server rooms, network closets, and edge deployments where racked and tower-mounted equipment need clean, protected power. Across this collection the systems run from 750 VA / 600 W up to 3000 VA / 2700 W, all using line-interactive topology with pure sine wave output and all supporting extended runtime through add-on battery packs. Smart-UPS X sits above the entry-level Back-UPS and standard Smart-UPS tiers in the APC lineup: it is the “X” (eXtended runtime) range that customers choose when they need long backup times, in tower models that rack-mount with a kit and in dedicated 2U rackmount models.

If you are sizing a UPS to buy for a rack of servers, networking gear, NVRs, or other always-on equipment, this series is aimed at you. Every model below is APC by Schneider Electric stock, shipped from Canada.

How to choose a Smart-UPS X

VA vs. watts (sizing). A UPS is rated two ways: apparent power (VA) and real power (watts). Your load must stay under both figures. In this series the watt rating is the binding limit for most IT loads: e.g. a 3000 VA SMX is rated 2700 W. Add up the watt draw of everything you plan to plug in, then add roughly 20 to 25% headroom and pick a model whose wattage comfortably exceeds that total. Sizing by watts (not just VA) keeps you from overloading a unit that looks big enough on the VA label.

Runtime expectations. The runtime columns above show how long each model holds up at half load and at full load on its internal batteries. Heavier loads mean shorter runtime: that is why full-load minutes are well below half-load minutes. If you need to ride through longer outages or bridge to a generator, every Smart-UPS X in this range is extended-runtime capable: you add matching external battery packs to multiply runtime.

Topology. The Smart-UPS X range is line-interactive. Line-interactive UPS units regulate voltage (AVR) and switch to battery in a few milliseconds, with pure sine wave output that is safe for active-PFC server power supplies and sensitive electronics. This is the right topology for most server-room, networking, and edge workloads. For mission-critical loads that cannot tolerate any transfer time at all, a double-conversion online UPS is the alternative class: but for most rack and tower deployments, line-interactive Smart-UPS X is the practical choice.

Rack vs. tower. The RM models are 2U rackmount units. The tower models (such as the SMX750C, SMX1000C and SMX3000HV) stand as a tower and rack-mount with a kit; check each product page for the kit and rack height.

Key features of the series

  • Pure sine wave output across the whole range: compatible with active-PFC and sensitive electronics.
  • Line-interactive AVR corrects high and low voltage without draining the battery.
  • Rackmount (2U) and tower models; the tower models rack-mount with a kit.
  • Extended-runtime capable: add external battery packs for longer backup.
  • SmartSlot for network management cards; NC variants ship with a network card already fitted.
  • 120 V, 208 V and 230 V variants to match North American and high-voltage deployments.

Warranty, Canadian shipping & support

APC lists a 3-year warranty on the Smart-UPS X unit and 2 years on its battery. All stock in this collection ships from Canada.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Smart-UPS X and standard Smart-UPS?
The “X” range is built for extended runtime, so you can scale backup time with external battery packs; it comes in 2U rackmount models and in tower models that rack-mount with a kit. It targets longer-hold-time deployments above the standard Smart-UPS tier.

Are these line-interactive or online (double-conversion) UPS systems?
Every model in this collection is line-interactive with pure sine wave output. That suits the vast majority of server-room, networking, and edge loads. If you specifically require zero-transfer double-conversion power, that is a different UPS class.

How do I size the right model?
Total the watt draw of your equipment, add 20 to 25% headroom, and pick a model whose watt rating exceeds that. Confirm the unit's VA rating also clears your VA total. Watts are usually the binding limit for IT gear.

Can I get longer runtime than the table shows?
Yes. Every Smart-UPS X here is extended-runtime capable: add matching external battery packs to multiply backup time well beyond the internal-battery figures listed.

Do these ship from Canada?
Yes. All units in this collection ship from Canada with Canadian support.
