Vertiv vs APC UPS remote monitoring and clean shutdown comparison for Canadian IT teams

Vertiv or APC: which UPS is better for remote monitoring and clean shutdowns?

Short answer: APC and Vertiv can both monitor a UPS over the network and shut servers down cleanly, including VMware vCenter clusters. The differences are cost and coverage. APC PowerChute Network Shutdown needs a paid subscription to protect vCenter or Nutanix clusters, and it lists more hyperconverged platforms. Vertiv Power Insight is free for up to 100 Vertiv devices and includes a vCenter plugin. APC's NMC 3 and Vertiv's RDU101 card both support SNMP v3, Modbus TCP and BACnet/IP.

  • APC network card: Network Management Card 3 (AP9640, AP9641, AP9643)
  • Vertiv network card: IntelliSlot RDU120 on "N" models, RDU101 as an option
  • Free APC software: PowerChute Serial Shutdown; PowerChute Network Shutdown on Windows, Linux or a standalone ESXi host
  • Free Vertiv software: Power Assist (up to 2 UPS); Power Insight (up to 100 devices)
  • Paid: PowerChute Network Shutdown for virtualized clusters; EcoStruxure IT Expert; Vertiv Environet Connect

Cloud and fleet monitoring EcoStruxure IT Expert (subscription, 30-day trial); EcoStruxure IT SmartConnect for units with a SmartConnect port Vertiv Environet Connect (cloud subscription), Environet Alert (on premises); Vertiv LIFE Services remote monitoring (on GXT5, needs the RDU120)

Vertiv Trellis, which older comparisons cite, is a discontinued product family on Vertiv's site. Schneider has also replaced PowerChute Personal Edition and PowerChute Business Edition with PowerChute Serial Shutdown, which has no macOS version.

How does a clean shutdown work with APC?

A Network Management Card 3 in the UPS SmartSlot reports the UPS state over the network. PowerChute Network Shutdown runs on each protected server and starts the shutdown sequence you configure when the UPS goes on battery. With the subscription, it also protects hosts and virtual machines managed by vCenter, Hyper-V or Nutanix. Each Smart-UPS needs its own card. For one server connected to the UPS by USB or serial, PowerChute Serial Shutdown does the job without a card.

How does a clean shutdown work with Vertiv?

An IntelliSlot RDU120 or RDU101 card reports the UPS state to Vertiv Power Insight. Power Insight sends alerts and runs the shutdown through an automation agent on each server, and its vCenter plugin shuts down or migrates virtual machines. RDU101 firmware 1.9.0.0 added VxRail shutdown through Power Insight. For one or two UPS over USB or SNMP, Vertiv Power Assist shuts down the connected computer.

Which is better for VMware, Hyper-V or Nutanix?

Both cover the common platforms. The choice turns on cost and on the platforms you run:

  • APC lists VMware ESXi with vCenter, vSAN, Nutanix (ESXi and AHV), Dell VxRail, HPE SimpliVity, Cisco HyperFlex and Microsoft Hyper-V for PowerChute Network Shutdown. Protecting a virtualized cluster needs the paid subscription after a one-time 30-day trial.
  • Vertiv lists a vCenter plugin, Nutanix AHV, Hyper-V and SCVMM for Power Insight, which is free for up to 100 devices.

A cluster on SimpliVity or HyperFlex points to APC. A vCenter or Nutanix AHV cluster powered by up to 100 Vertiv UPS and rack PDUs needs no software subscription on Vertiv; each UPS still needs its network card.

Which is better inside a building automation system?

The NMC 3 and the RDU101 both support the building protocols over IP. Schneider's NMC 3 user guide lists Modbus TCP/IP and BACnet/IP; the se.com data sheets do not list BACnet, so check the guide rather than the data sheet. Vertiv's RDU101 adds the serial versions, BACnet MSTP and Modbus RTU, through the USB485I adapter. On APC, Modbus RTU comes through the AP9641 I/O port or the AP9643 RS-485 port.

Which UPS models take each card?

Which replacement batteries do these UPS take?

APC lists RBC7 for the SMT1500C, RBC55 for the SMT2200C and SMT3000C, and APCRBC155, APCRBC141 and APCRBC152 for the SRT1500XLA, SRT2200XLA and SRT3000XLA. Vertiv lists GXT5-48VBATKIT for the GXT5 1500 and 2000 VA, GXT5-72VBATKIT for the 3000 VA, and PSI5-1500BATKIT, PSI5-2200BATKIT and PSI5-3000BATKIT for the PSI5. APC gives a 3 to 5-year life for the lead-acid batteries in the SMT1500C, SMT2200C and the SRT 1500 to 3000 VA models.

Replacement batteries: APC Smart-UPS batteries, Liebert and Vertiv batteries (GXT4, GXT5, PSI5 by model).

Frequently asked questions

Is Vertiv or APC better for remote monitoring?

Neither is better across the board. APC PowerChute Network Shutdown covers more hyperconverged platforms but needs a paid subscription for virtualized clusters. Vertiv Power Insight is free for up to 100 Vertiv devices and includes a vCenter plugin. APC's NMC 3 and Vertiv's RDU101 card both support SNMP v3, Modbus TCP and BACnet/IP.

Is PowerChute free?

PowerChute Serial Shutdown is a free download. PowerChute Network Shutdown needs no licence on Windows, Linux or a standalone ESXi host, but protecting vCenter, VxRail, Hyper-V, Nutanix, HyperFlex or SimpliVity needs a 1, 3, 5 or 6-year subscription after a 30-day trial (Schneider also documents an unlicensed option for Hyper-V).

Is Vertiv Power Insight free?

Yes. Vertiv describes Power Insight as complimentary software for up to 100 Vertiv UPS and rack PDUs, with alerts, automatic server shutdown and a vCenter plugin.

Does the APC Network Management Card 3 support BACnet?

Yes. Schneider's NMC 3 user guide lists BACnet/IP and Modbus TCP/IP. The AP9641 and AP9643 also offer Modbus RTU.

Can the APC Smart-UPS C SMC1500-2UC use PowerChute Network Shutdown?

No. The Smart-UPS C SMC1500-2UC has no SmartSlot, so it cannot take a Network Management Card. Use a Smart-UPS SMT or SRT if the UPS must shut servers down over the network.
