Three physical dimensions matter when specifying a rackmount Smart-UPS: rack height (U), width (always 19 inches for standard racks), and rack depth. Depth varies significantly across the Smart-UPS range:

• Short-depth (under 500 mm): Smart-UPS Ultra SRTL at 795 mm is the exception; most SMT and early SMX models sit around 450–510 mm. Fits shallow wall-mount or telecom racks.
• Standard depth (500–700 mm): Most SRT 1–3 kVA models in the 585–636 mm range. Fits all standard server racks.
• Deep chassis (700 mm+): SRT 5/6/8/10 kVA at 715–719 mm. Requires a full-depth rack (typically 1000 mm or deeper enclosure) to allow cable management behind the unit.

Always check rack depth in the spec sheet before ordering. A SRT5KRMXLT will not fit in a 600-mm-deep telecom rack, no matter how many U of height are available.

How to choose rackmount vs tower

Three questions decide it:

1. Is the equipment already in a rack? If yes, specify rackmount — don't scatter critical power protection onto the floor of the rack room.
2. Will the deployment scale beyond one unit? Multiple UPS units in rack form factor stack cleanly; multiple towers on the floor become a cable-management nightmare.
3. Is airflow managed front-to-back? Rackmount Smart-UPS units exhaust rearward through the rack. Tower units draw ambient room air and vent out the top — fine for a dedicated tower next to a desk, problematic if placed inside a hot rack.

Can I convert a tower Smart-UPS to rackmount?

No, not as a field modification. Tower-only units (SMT750I, SMT1000I, SMT1500I without RM in the part number) lack rack-mount points and cannot be converted. If you need a rackmount unit, specify the rackmount SKU (SMT750RMI2U, SMT1000RMI2U, SMT1500RM2UC, etc.) from the start. The rack/tower convertible SRT and SMX models deploy either way.

What does RM mean in the model number?

RM = rackmount. The full suffix code tells you chassis format: RMI2U = rackmount 2U with IEC outlets, RM2UC = rackmount 2U with Canadian (NEMA 5-15) outlets, RMXLI = rackmount extended-runtime with IEC outlets.
