What is a rackmount APC Smart-UPS?

A rackmount APC Smart-UPS is a Smart-UPS unit built in a 1U to 6U chassis sized to mount in a standard 19-inch equipment rack alongside servers, switches, and storage. Rackmount Smart-UPS models are a common specification for server-room and data-closet deployments because they free floor space, improve airflow organisation, and keep the power-protection layer integrated with the rest of the rack, rather than sitting on the floor next to it.

Rack depth and cable management

Three physical dimensions matter when specifying a rackmount Smart-UPS: rack height (U), width (always 19 inches for standard racks), and rack depth. Depth varies significantly across the Smart-UPS range:

Short-depth (under 500 mm): smaller 2U SMT models such as the SMT750RMI2U (406 mm) and SMT1500RM2UC (477 mm). Fits shallow wall-mount or telecom racks.
Standard depth (500 to 700 mm): SRT 1 to 3 kVA models (508 to 635 mm), the SMT2200RMI2U / SMT3000RMI2U (683 mm), the SMX2200RMHV2U (667 mm) and the 1U SMT1500RM1UC (665 mm). Fits most standard server racks.
Deep chassis (700 mm+): SRT 5/6/8/10 kVA at 715 to 719 mm and the SRTL5KRM2UT at 701 mm. Requires a full-depth rack (typically 1000 mm or deeper enclosure) to allow cable management behind the unit.

Always check rack depth in the spec sheet before ordering. A SRT5KRMXLT will not fit in a 600-mm-deep telecom rack, no matter how many U of height are available.

How to choose rackmount vs tower

Three questions decide it:

Is the equipment already in a rack? If yes, specify rackmount: don't scatter critical power protection onto the floor of the rack room.
Will the deployment scale beyond one unit? Multiple UPS units in rack form factor stack cleanly; multiple towers on the floor become a cable-management nightmare.
Is airflow managed front-to-back? Rackmount Smart-UPS units exhaust rearward through the rack. Tower units draw ambient room air and vent out the top, fine for a dedicated tower next to a desk, problematic if placed inside a hot rack.

For any server-room deployment where the answer to the first question is yes, rackmount is the right specification. The rack/tower convertible chassis (most SMX and SRT models) gives you an escape hatch if the business later moves the equipment.

Do rackmount Smart-UPS include rail kits?

APC's data sheets list a rack-mount kit as included on the SRT rackmount models. For other models, check the data sheet for the included rail kit and the supported rack depth.

Can I convert a tower Smart-UPS to rackmount?

No, not as a field modification. Tower-only units (SMT750I, SMT1000I, SMT1500I without RM in the part number) lack rack-mount points and cannot be converted. If you need a rackmount unit, specify the rackmount SKU (SMT750RMI2U, SMT1000RMI2U, SMT1500RM2UC, etc.) from the start. The rack/tower convertible SRT and SMX models deploy either way.

What does RM mean in the model number?

RM = rackmount. The full suffix code tells you chassis format: RMI2U = rackmount 2U with IEC outlets, RM2UC = rackmount 2U with SmartConnect (the C suffix), RMXLI = rackmount extended-runtime, 230 V international. So SMT1500RM2UC decodes as Smart-UPS, 1500 VA, rackmount, 2U, SmartConnect (120 V, NEMA 5-15P).

How deep are rackmount Smart-UPS units?

2U SMT models run from 406 mm (SMT750RMI2U) to 683 mm (SMT2200RMI2U / SMT3000RMI2U) deep. 2U SRT 1 to 3 kVA models are 508 to 635 mm deep. Do rackmount Smart-UPS support hot-swap batteries?
