What is an industrial UPS?
Industrial UPS protects loads in environments where power events translate to lost production — SCADA control rooms, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), CNC and motion-control systems, process-industry sensors and actuators, water and wastewater plants, transportation control. Industrial UPS prioritises galvanic isolation, wide input voltage tolerance, hard-wired terminal connections, three-phase support, and chassis hardened for harsher ambient conditions.
Tripp Lite's industrial-grade catalog covers two tiers: single-phase SmartOnline SU-series 5–20 kVA on 208/230 V for control-room and skid-mounted equipment, and three-phase SmartOnline S3M 10–80 kVA for facility-scale deployments. UPSPLUSBATTERY.CA stocks the single-phase range and quotes the S3M three-phase line on request. For commercial server-room equivalents see Tripp Lite SmartOnline UPS. How to choose
Online double-conversion is mandatory
Industrial PLCs, motion drives, and instrumentation generally cannot tolerate the 2–4 ms transfer of line-interactive — even brief gaps cause control-loop interruptions. SmartOnline is double-conversion online: zero transfer time, full input isolation, fully regenerated sine wave at all times.
Single-phase vs three-phase
Most control-room equipment runs single-phase 208/230 V — SmartOnline SU 5–20 kVA covers this tier. Three-phase S3M 10–80 kVA when upstream is three-phase or load exceeds ~20 kVA single-phase.
Sizing for industrial inrush
Industrial loads often have inrush currents 6–10× nominal. Add nameplate watts × 1.25 buffer for steady-state, then verify the UPS's overload tolerance against expected inrush. Confirm specific inrush handling with our team. UPS sizing guide.
Battery runtime
Most industrial deployments size battery runtime for graceful shutdown — typically 15–30 minutes. SmartOnline supports BP-series external battery packs for runtime extension; S3M uses external battery cabinets configured at install.
Spec reference
Replacement batteries
SU 5–6 kVA: RBC96-2U or BP-series external pack. SU 10–20 kVA: SUBM10KRM3U module or external battery cabinet. S3M three-phase: dedicated battery cabinet with hot-swap modules. Aftermarket SLA replacements stocked for SU-series cells — 1-year UPSPLUSBATTERY warranty. Tripp Lite replacement batteries.
Installation and warranty
SU 5–6 kVA on L6-30P plug — dedicated 30 A 208/230 V circuit by licensed electrician per CSA. SU 10 kVA+ hard-wired only. S3M three-phase always requires commissioning by qualified Tripp Lite / Eaton-authorised technician. Warranty: typically 2–3 years on SmartOnline electronics. Coordinated through our Canadian team. Shipped from our Canadian warehouse. Replies within 1 business day.
FAQ
SU 6K vs SU 10K?
SU 6K (4200 W) covers a typical control-panel + skid load. SU 10K (9 kW) covers larger industrial cabinets or denser PLC racks. 6K plug-in via L6-30P; 10K hard-wired only.
S3M three-phase — when?
When upstream is three-phase 208 V, when load exceeds ~20 kVA single-phase, or when modular hot-swap power and battery is required. Always commissioned by qualified technician.
Inrush handling?
SmartOnline specifies peak overload current and duration. Size against worst-case transient. Replies within 1 business day.
Network management?
SNMP card slot on SU-series accepts WEBCARDLX. SNMP, web, Modbus, integration with VMware, Hyper-V, Linux via PowerAlert.
Battery runtime extension?
BP-series external battery packs on SU 5–10 kVA. External battery cabinets on SU 20K and S3M. Sized to ride-through requirement at install.
Canadian warranty?
Yes — Tripp Lite (Eaton) factory warranty covers Canada. Coordinated through our Canadian team.
