About APC RBC Battery Cartridges

What is an APC RBC battery?

APCRBC stands for APC Replacement Battery Cartridge. It's the part-numbering system APC by Schneider Electric uses for every factory-sanctioned replacement battery pack across the Back-UPS, Smart-UPS, Smart-UPS X, and Smart-UPS SRT families. Every APC UPS ships with its compatible APCRBC number printed on the unit label and listed in the user manual. That number is the only replacement APC and Schneider Electric will guarantee to fit, hold rated capacity, and preserve warranty coverage.

An APCRBC cartridge is not a single battery — it's a pre-assembled module containing the correct number of sealed lead-acid cells wired to the correct voltage stack for the target UPS, terminated in the correct connector, and shipped with a tested-date sticker. You drop it into the battery bay, connect the polarised plug, reset the install date on the front panel, and you're done. See our full APC UPS collection for the corresponding UPS units, or the full UPS replacement batteries collection for other brands.

How to find the right APCRBC for your UPS

There are three authoritative sources for the correct APCRBC number for your UPS. In order of reliability:

  1. The unit label. Every APC UPS has a label on the side or back listing the model number and the compatible APCRBC. This is the definitive reference — if your unit's label says APCRBC124, that's the part you need.
  2. The user manual. The battery section lists the replacement cartridge part number for that specific model.
  3. The front panel. On SMT, SMX, and SRT models with LCD, the About menu displays the battery part number.

If the label is worn off or unreachable, use the UPS model number to cross-reference. The table below maps the most common APC UPS models to their APCRBC cartridges.

Genuine vs compatible cartridges

Two product categories sit under the APC RBC umbrella. Both power the UPS correctly. The differences matter only in specific scenarios.

Genuine APC: OEM cartridge manufactured to Schneider Electric's spec, with factory tested-date sticker, full APC warranty (typically two years matching the UPS), and guaranteed compatibility with PowerChute's runtime-estimation algorithms. Required if the UPS is under active APC warranty or covered by a Schneider Electric service contract.

Compatible third-party: Identical form factor, identical connector, identical voltage stack, built from reputable SLA cells (Yuasa, CSB, BB Battery, Panasonic). Typically 30–50% less than genuine. Carries the third-party manufacturer's warranty instead of APC's. Suitable for out-of-warranty UPS where the UPS is simply being kept in service at minimum cost.

For business-critical infrastructure still under APC warranty, specify genuine. For aging office-tier units being maintained at low cost, compatible delivers the same protection at significantly less expense.

How long do APCRBC batteries last?

APC rates its sealed lead-acid APCRBC cartridges for three to five years of useful service life in a climate-controlled environment (20–25 °C ambient). The three factors that determine actual life:

  • Ambient temperature. Every 8 °C above 25 °C roughly halves battery life. A UPS installed in a hot electrical closet at 35 °C will need a replacement in two years, not five.
  • Number of discharge cycles. Each full discharge-recharge cycle consumes a fraction of the battery's service life. A UPS that rides through multiple outages per week ages faster than one that rarely switches to battery.
  • Float voltage. APC UPS automatically temperature-compensate charging to extend life — this is one reason genuine APCRBC cartridges outlast generic cells in long-term installations.

PowerChute and the front-panel LCD will flag the battery as "replace" once internal impedance crosses the threshold. Replace promptly at that point — the UPS will still power the load, but it can no longer guarantee rated runtime.

How to replace an APCRBC cartridge

On every current Smart-UPS, Smart-UPS X, Smart-UPS SRT, and Back-UPS Pro, the APCRBC cartridge is user-replaceable and hot-swappable — you can complete the swap while the UPS continues to protect the load. The procedure:

  1. Order the correct APCRBC for your UPS model (confirm against the unit label).
  2. When the new cartridge arrives, slide the front bezel off the UPS to expose the battery bay.
  3. Disconnect the polarised battery plug.
  4. Slide the old cartridge out and the new cartridge in.
  5. Reconnect the battery plug until it clicks.
  6. Replace the front bezel.
  7. On the front-panel LCD, navigate to the battery menu and reset the install date so PowerChute can recalibrate runtime estimation.

The whole swap takes under five minutes per unit. Recycle the old cartridge at any municipal hazardous-waste depot or return it to us for recycling.

Frequently asked questions

What does APCRBC stand for?

APC Replacement Battery Cartridge. It's the part-numbering system APC by Schneider Electric uses for every factory-approved UPS battery replacement.

How do I find which APCRBC I need?

Check the unit label on the side or back of your APC UPS — it lists the compatible APCRBC number directly. Alternatively, check the user manual, or the About menu on units with an LCD display.

Can I use a non-APC battery in my APC UPS?

A compatible third-party cartridge with matching form factor, voltage, and connector will power the UPS correctly. APC will not honour the UPS warranty on a battery-caused failure if a non-APC cartridge is installed, and PowerChute's runtime estimation may drift until the UPS learns the new cells. For out-of-warranty units being maintained cheaply, this tradeoff is often worth it. For in-warranty business infrastructure, specify genuine APC.

How often should I replace APC UPS batteries?

Every three to five years in a climate-controlled environment, earlier if the ambient temperature is above 25 °C. Replace immediately when PowerChute or the front-panel LCD flags the battery as "replace" — rated runtime is no longer guaranteed after that warning appears.

Are APCRBC cartridges hot-swappable?

Yes, on every current Smart-UPS, Smart-UPS X, Smart-UPS SRT, and Back-UPS Pro. The UPS continues to protect the load during the swap. Reset the battery install date via the front panel afterward.

Do APCRBC batteries ship with a warranty?

Yes. Genuine APC APCRBC cartridges ship with a two-year APC warranty matching the Smart-UPS battery warranty term. Compatible third-party cartridges carry the third-party manufacturer's warranty instead — typically twelve to twenty-four months. All batteries sold by UPSPLUSBATTERY.CA include our Canadian warranty servicing.

How do I dispose of an old UPS battery?

Sealed lead-acid UPS batteries are fully recyclable and should not go in household trash. Drop them at any municipal hazardous-waste depot, a Call2Recycle collection point (retail locations across Canada), or ship them back to us with your new cartridge order for free recycling.
